I've been working remotely for 17 years 😳

I'm on 20 years now. Never go back. Wife wants to drive across Canada this summer and as long as I have decent internet (do you hear that, Elon?) I just may be able to do that.

I am 37, 17 years of being an entrepreneur, digital nomad, 15 years of freedom, travel etc. I started programming at the age of 16, it took me years to find success but it worth it so much.

I got first remote job in July of 2000, been fully or partially remote ever since.

I'm also 34 and have worked remote since 2010! It's been unreal watching the concept of working remotely turn into a whole culture. I'm excited to hear from someone who has worked this way even longer.

How did you start working remotely at 17?

Wow! That’s impressive. Only doing it for a couple of years.

I hope that remote trend that we got now will produce as many digital nomads as possible. I know this lifestyle is unsustainable in the long term, but I think you’ll agree, that even a couple of years of traveling can change you in a profound way.

Also hope remote infrastructure continues growing and helping with all the negative sides of digital nomad lifestyle. Especially loneliness.

Fully remote has been 10+ years for me. Semi-remote for 5 years before that.

I think it's almost 8 years now for me total. I had a two year break where I worked full-time at the public broadcasting network here in Iceland, but it wasn't for me so I went back to freelancing remotely.

I love being able to go anywhere whenever I want. Me and the Mrs. often spend months abroad when we feel like it.

I was a very early user of UpWork, Odesk those first years.

If you don't mind me asking, what tools are you using for remote work, what did you started with and what do you use today? Do you think the tools you use will continue to change?
