I've got 12 ideas to choose from for the next month, help me pick one.

I'm going to pick 1 idea from this list and ship it next month. Feel free to chime in on what you’d like to see me build. Curious to hear what you think.

  1. Twitch for makers/entrepreneurs
  • I feel like there are some people I would watch/I want to see how they do it, even if it's just watching their every day flow to learn tips.
  • I feel like I could potentially get some people to do it/I would do it.
  • Start by posting people’s streams as they come up. Doesn’t necessarily have to be hosted on my own platform.
  1. Image proxy for people using S3
  • Just a simple image proxy for people using S3 to bring down their costs, it’s a large part of the cost (maybe 50% or more for image heavy sites), super easy to setup and find.
  • Not sure if this is a big enough pain point for people.
  • I’d scan a buttload of websites using S3 and offer to set it up for people for free
  • After a month trial goes to $5 for 100 images, $25 for 500, $50 for 1k and so on.
  1. Web Component weekly newsletter
  • I collect send out a list of web components each week. Every week is a different focus (date pickers, modals, forms, etc)
  • Could build a site with the emails as articles
  • I feel like web components are slowly gaining traction
  • This could turn into something else like a search app
  1. Component storage
  • I’m sick of building components and never seeing them again/having to dig them out of old projects
  • This let’s me build them and easily re-use them/show them off.
    import {Menu} from '@gkiely';
  1. Drag and drop songs
  • Drag and drop songs from spotify. You can see what your close friends have dropped. Cross between product hunt and group messenger for songs.
  • I know this one is crazy/everyone has tried to do songs, but dang it I can never find new music.
  1. Google docs powered wiki
  • Google docs sucks as a wiki
  • People who have G suite, want to use their docs as a wiki
  • Plugin into existing platform/use apps store
  1. Personal bare metrics
  • Makers posting their stats on twitter every month. This would be a dashboard they can hook up the metrics like RMR/stats they want and share it/use it to keep focussed/track their progress.
  1. Listing for open source bugs
  1. A better code search/Alternative to google
  • I’m constantly searching google for code -> clicking into stack overflow and reading. I feel like I could speed up this flow.
  • Specific problem is when I’ve searched for it before and have to search again -> takes about 30s when it should be about 3-5s.
  • Save past queries for faster access/Runnable code in the results.
  1. Get analytics for people you interview
  • This is for sites like indiehackers/starterstory where they have to interview people and get their stats, assumption is that it’s annoying to have to ask the interviewee to generate reports on mailchimp/google analytics/etc.
  1. Have feedback?
  • Really like the simple feedback modal https://nomadlist.com has. Would build something like it.
  • Form to configure it, 30s to drop it on your site. It sends you emails.
  1. Custom video designs (HTML5/video.js)
  • I would design and build 5 video designs
  • People can download them and use them for free
  • Build some pro video skins
  • Maybe build a custom video builder

Would love to hear which ones you like or don't like, or just your thoughts in general. Thanks!

For selfish reason, I vote Google Docs powered wiki. I don't currently utilize anything at the moment for an internal wiki, but I do know that once I get my startup team selected and development actually goes underway, I'd like to have an internal wiki for content-sharing and standardization purposes.

    1. 2

You are more than welcome to be selfish :D
Thanks Caitlin I've noted down your vote.

    2. 1

No selfish reasons, but this would definitely be useful for many companies.

    1. Twitch for makers/entrepreneurs

That is probably just Twitch. How would yours be different / better?

    1. 1

I guess I wasn't thinking of competing directly with twitch or youtube but here is a couple of ideas I had around it:

      1. List of twitch & youtube videos that continuously gets updated (by myself and users) -> Pre-existing content
      2. Approach experienced makers and ask them to do a segment of them coding/building/marketing -> New content
      3. Approach experienced makers and ask them to do a challenge and post that (launch an mvp in a 4 hours, launch an mvp without coding, etc) -> New content
      4. New makers who want to stream/build in public -> New content by community

Do you think any of those would add value or could differentiate it from twitch/youtube?

      1. 1

A place to gather, annotate and participate in challenges could work. It can be overwhelming to know where to start to watch various projects etc. So as an organizational layer over the top of twitch or yt could work.

    2. 1

A lot of people are streaming maker content on youtube too.

      1. 1

do you have a few example channels. I want to watch those actually. :)

    3. 1

@joshdance this kind of video already exists on Twitch? Do you have some account to follow?

      1. 1

I don't have any in mind. But Twitch is a platform that has platform dynamics so if someone did want to stream their making/entrepreneur stuff, they would go there?

        Here is a guy doing 3d printing/making.
        https://www.twitch.tv/3dprintinglab

And there are already some programmers there.
        https://www.twitch.tv/directory/game/Programming

        1. 1

Okay. I use twitch to watch gamers only :-)

          I've just watched https://www.twitch.tv/directory/game/Programming
          Pretty cool :-)

  3. 5

Sounds like a lot of solutions looking for problems.

    1. Drag and drop songs. Dang it I can never find new music

Spotify -> Browse -> Discover. Or if you like a song, right-click -> Song Radio. Same for artists you like: right-click -> Artist Radio.

    Or last.fm -> search -> similar artists/music.

    1. Have feedback?

Heads up: I've already built that, 100% free forever, no-code, doesn't require any back-end hosting to send the email (but can optionally still be done). Indeed takes less than 30 seconds.

I'm just finishing the webpage I'll host it on before I publish.

I personally like #8, contributing to open source is a great way to keep your skills up (& improve your resume) but finding a project can take some effort. Not sure how you'd monetize it though, "I like it" doesn't mean "it'll be a great business".

#1 can be done really quickly. Don't build your own platform (video streaming platforms = complicated and expensive). Instead, give each founder their "corner" where you store VODs. Can use Twitch VODs or Youtube. Serves as an "indie founder discovery" site for building startups in the open. Can be done manually at first w/ landen.co or carrd.co. I would personally consider streaming if this would exist. Again, monetization will be hard unless you get traction/visitors (e.g. advertising). Small market atm, so don't let it take up too much time to validate (but has potential to push productivity similar to wip.chat - we're already building anyway, so founders don't need to change their productivity).

#6 has potential and easier monetization. Value also strengthened by the usability boost of usefyi (versus other wikis/platforms), as well as Zapier for automation and other platforms that integrated GDocs. Using GDocs = you get that integration for free. MVP also doable in 1 or 2 weeks. I personally don't need it though, so wouldn't pay for it.

    1. 1

Great feedback thanks Sebastian. That’s funny we’ve had the exact same idea around levelsio feedback. Would love to use your solution when you release it.

Great idea about their own corner with vod 👏

Thanks for feedback around #6, I’ll check out that link.

Yeah #8 has always been a problem for me, I was thinking I could just do it without monetisation and maybe if it gets enough traffic setup a job board.

      1. 1

#8 stood out to me too (not sure who tags easy, medium, hard), and i think if you capture who's tackling which bug then you create a StackOverflow like points/career site model

        1. 1

          Thanks, Ive noted that.
I was thinking either: the maintainers would tag it (when they submit) or the community has mods that tag it.
Yeah I agree I thought it could be more fun like SO.

      2. 1

Ah well, I thought of making something free and no-code for everyone a few months ago but put it off. Seeing it again on NomadList popped the idea in my head again so instead of delaying, I spent some hours on the weekend building it.

I've updated my feedback, so give it another read. For each idea, I recommend thinking of monetization / business model before implementing anything. Some are in a right direction, but are missing strong, undeniable value that's being delivered to the future client. You need to answer the "why".

        1. 1

I will try to take time to include this as part of the selection process.
I often don't put enough forethought into how the monetization/business model will work before starting on an idea so this is a timely reminder. Appreciate it.

    Google docs powered wiki 🙌🏼

      1. 1

I would suggest you check out this: https://coda.io .I used it this year for some time, It is built over Google Drive in some way because they are linked when you use it. Also its pretty hardcore compared to a wiki, but might give you ideas :)

  5. 3

Awesome list Grant. Cool to see so many creative ideas flowing from you.

#1 sounds similar to newCo by @bentossell :)

    1. 4

      Thanks Davis!

Haha I'm not trying to do a Jin Yang and build the new newCo I promise.

I guess I think of newCo as a kind of egghead.io for non-coders (could be wrong just from what I've seen) whereas this would literally just be a feed of streams from different makers.

Google docs powered wiki!! I'd love that!

    1. 1

      Cool Tommaso, added your vote!

  7. 2

Hey, I am working on one of your ideas. Google Docs powered wiki. Been on it for less than a month now. Want to collaborate? Working alone sucks 😢

    1. 1

Nice one, I’d be interested to see where you’re up to.

  8. 1

@gkiely I'd love to chat about the wiki. I've wished for this with several startup teams over the years, and for teams that I mentor.

    1. 1

Sounds good David, just sent you an email, look forward to chatting to you about it!

  9. 1

    @caitlinjohnson @bootstrapCHILA @r4id4 @vbordo @Denis
    @joejoe @markuretsky

Do you guys mind if I shoot you a quick email around the Google Docs powered wiki idea?

It's the one I picked and I’m trying to gather as much feedback as I can before I start.

    1. 1

      sure, go ahead

    2. 1

Absolutely - looking forward to it!

    3. 1

Go for it. Email's on my profile

  10. 1

Thanks to everyone who gave feedback, I'm very grateful for your time and input and the response was far greater than I was expecting!

Based on the responses and a bit of market research I've decided to go with "Google docs powered wiki" idea.

It was the one I was secretly excited about :D but I was trying to put that excitement aside so I could be as unbiased as possible in accessing the market and idea.

I will keep the other ideas in mind for the future. Really excited to build this over the next month!

If you're currently using Google docs and you're finding it a bit messy or you're just generally interested in a Google docs powered wiki, I'd love to chat to you about what you've tried and what problems you've had up until this point, just ping me on here or via my email in my profile and I'll get back to you.

    Thanks!

  11. 1

@gkiely Looking forward to whatever you build. I'm sure you will get some good content from documenting the process. I noticed postinspect hasn't been added to your list of products yet.

    1. 1

Thanks @dshuang, I'll let you know!
PostInspect is not generating revenue yet but if it does I'll add it.

  12. 1

I've actually been thinking/dreaming of number 9, I agree with your sentiment that the code search takes too long and always leads to the same thing, first result for stackoverflow, codeblock in the most upvoted/accepted answer. I would love to have/help build this service (plus so many other ideas could stem from this service to further speed up development).

    1. 1

Thanks aegoen. Noted your vote. Would be interested to hear about the other ideas you have around this :D

  13. 1

These are my favorites in this order:
    6., 7., 1., 3., 11.

    1. 1

      Thanks for your input Josef!

  14. 1

go with Twitch for X. Plenty of youtubers who are unhappy with YT and have huge pains and a desire to take more control.

    1. 1

      Thanks Thomas, added your vote.

  15. 1

I'd vote for Twitch for entrepreneurs.

I just launched something today which might help you decide.
It's like Product Hunt but for ideas. The best ideas of the day get voted up

    https://ideasareworthless.io/

    1. 1

Cool Idea! Haha some of the ideas on there are awesome!

  16. 1

Im extremely biased towards #3 and #4 because Im really into components stuff ^^. Not sure If I would personally subscribe to another newsletter, but I think many people would. I think the component world is a perfect combination of Design + Development so many people from both worlds might be interested. Also it can easily be made very eye catchy!

And for the component storage it would be amazing, to find components (from all frameworks, native spec etc...). Something like this: http://collectui.com/ but on a per component basis, and with code backing it up. "I need a date picker > Searches date pickers > Gets repo" even if you find it done using a different library/framework it might give you the inspiration to port it on your own.

    Great ideas!

    1. 1

Haha me too. Collectui is cool haven't seen that before.
I agree about the component storage/library would be cool, but I'm not sure if I can think of the best way to execute it yet. I'll let you know.

      1. 1

Sure! Will love to see any progress as well as to help with any ideas.

  17. 1

    Hi Grant

    Great list!

    Here's my feedback:

    1. There's youtube, will be too hard to market, get content.
    2. I dont think there is much demand if people are using s3 they are already savy and will find a solution.
    3. Maybe, will take time.
    4. That could be cool i also had an idea to create universal open source bare bone components with all the functionality and you just modify the desgin. It will be probably useful but hard to monetize, now there is official materialui with great components.
    5. I agree spotify sucks to find new music.
    6. I pick this one but in a bit different way: if you do what ghost did to blogging. E.g. create a documentation, product faq, api docs, prodicts docs, wiki. And have the same business model as ghost (open source + paid cloud hosting). I really like this one and would co-create it :)
    7. Possibly but buffer.com?
    8. Github seems to do a good job?
    9. One trick i started just saving them somewhere if there a chance i need it again. That something you could build with number 4 collect frequently happens bugs on one page :)
    10. No odea.
    11. I think its easy to find a software for feedback there are just so many.
    12. Why anyone will need that? It's just nice to have.

    Hope it helps!

    1. 1

Thanks for following up on all of them Mark, I appreciate the candid feedback. I'll note down that you picked #5 and #6.

      1. 1

Be wary when people say e.g. "Spotify sucks to find new music". Quantify that emotion/assumption.

        For discovery, Spotify offers:

        • Your Daily Mix.
        • Browse -> Discover.
        • Browse -> ... anything. Per charts, per genre or even per mood, new releases, concerts.
        • New releases for you.
        • Similar artists/songs.
        • Song Radio / Artist Radio.
        • Radio, per genre or recommended.
        • What your friends are listening to.

So what they're actually saying, is "not having new music is not important enough to click one button in Spotify".

Highly recommend reading The Mom Test.

        1. 1

Thanks Sebastien, The mom test has been on my list to read but now that you mention it I'll move it up to the top, glad you brought it up.

So what they're actually saying, is "not having new music is not important enough to click one button in Spotify".

          Great point.

I would be interested to ask some users if they've tried the points you mentioned and what other things they've tried to find new music, and see if I can find some problems and derive a solution from that.

My current solution was very solution-first focussed I'm now seeing, and maybe the mom test can show me a better way to dig into those problems.

For me personally my current struggles are:

          • I find I still get stuck with a similar type of music on spotify.
          • I don't know the genres to search (I have a couple, but again the music stays the same most of the time).
          • I've tried looking at my friends playlists but there's just too much to sift through.
          1. 2

I would be interested to ask some users if they've tried the points you mentioned and what other things they've tried to find new music, and see if I can find some problems and derive a solution from that.
My current solution was very solution-first focussed I'm now seeing, and maybe the mom test can show me a better way to dig into those problems.

Just with those two paragraphs, you've already got it. :)

Quantify and work with real data, not people's feelings about something. Sounds harsh, but it's painfully unreliable.

And when you've done that, the only validation is when they're taking out their wallets to pay you right now. Again no opinions.

The Mom Test focuses specifically on asking questions to get those kinds of answers.

            1. 1

Awesome! Looking forward to checking it out.

    1. 1

      Thanks, noted.

  18. 1

I found this section of Josh Kaufman's 'The Personal MBA' to be quite useful in determining what a good idea might be:

    https://personalmba.com/10-ways-to-evaluate-a-market/

Score each of your ideas (in a spreadsheet or something) on each of these criteria out of 10, then...

When you’re done with your assessment, add up the score. If the score is 50 or below, move onto another idea—there are better places to invest your energy and resources. If the score is 75 or above, you have a very promising idea—full speed ahead.

Anything between 50 and 75 has the potential to pay the bills, but won’t be a home run without a huge investment of energy and resources, so plan accordingly.

    1. 1

Awesome thanks Jarod. Ive downloaded that book but haven’t had a chance to read it yet. I’ll take a read of this section.

  19. 1

Hi Grant. I'm impressed by how you can come up with a lot of ideas so easily. How do you do that?
    Cheers.
Anyway I like your idea #3 because it will teach new developers new things. With time, you will figure out which web component moves people the most. If people want to know more about a particular web component and how it works, then they will want to pay to know even more about it

    1. 1

Thanks Ben, Ive noted down that you like #3.
In terms of ideas I just use the mac notes app and jot them down whenever I think of them. Ones that keep coming back/I keep thinking about, I move them to a new list.

  20. 1

I'd say the image proxy for S3 (assuming you'd scan people's images who aren't hosting them on S3, then host them on S3 for them, and hence bring down their costs) seems like its solving the biggest pain.

    1. 1

I feel this would not be a very fruitful business. I think the only companies who want to use this are very frugal and also the ones who don't really have money to pay you a decent subscription.

Most companies just put Cloudfront in front of S3 to have a faster CDN providing the files. Your proxy would just be one location and a single point of failure.

    2. 1

Thanks Alia, I’ve noted down your vote.

    3. 1

Hi @aliakhtar, could you elaborate more on how hosting on s3 is bringing down cost?

      1. 1

I'm not sure if I understood it correctly, but bandwidth costs are cheaper on S3. So if there was an automated tool to move images hosted elsewhere onto S3, then high traffic websites might pay for that since it would bring down their bandwidth costs.

        1. 1

I feel like regular website won't have demands for that, hosting usually provides couple of TB worth of bandwidth.

  21. 1

I like idea number 9, but I think I have found a similar search engine before: https://publicwww.com

    1. 2

Thanks Abraham. Good to see there is potentially an existing market!

  22. 1

4 and 12 seem to be the best options.

I think you should verify your product concept with the audience and I think that #4 is best option for you to get started.

Also, I am subscribed to you (thanks to Product Hunt).

    1. 1

Thanks Evan! I'll take note that you liked #4 most and #12 second.

  23. 1

    IDEA: IH Rush Hour

I mentioned it in a private tweet to grant, but he's already done a site that helps you see best traffic times for reddit, should he do that here?

  24. 1

I love idea number 1. I would definitely stream my work.

    1. 2

Sounds good Sam! Thanks for your input.

  25. 1

The Google Docs powered wiki is an interesting idea that you should definitely pursue.

I have this exact Twitch idea written down on my list of ideas too. Your proposed MVP of a curated list of IHers who stream is a great start. Here are a few obstacles I keep coming back to with this concept.

In my observation of Twitch streaming + reading discussions with IHers who stream, the act of working live tends to diminish productivity. To maintain a large following, the streamer has to be attentive and keep a dialogue with the audience at all times. This is difficult to deliver as a productive maker.

As with any Twitch stream, viewers don't have much interest in the average maker. They want to be watching the best in the field, i.e. Ninja playing Fortnite. Currently, there isn't a great incentive for top makers like Pieter Levels or Mubs to stream if it cuts into their productivity.

Second, the market for watching makers work is probably growing but still relatively small. This somewhat ties into the above issue because the lack of viewers increases the difficulty of creating a financial incentive for top makers.

Let me know if you want to trade thoughts about the Twitch idea. It's a pretty fascinating one to think about!

    1. 1

Thanks for the insight into the twitch idea Victor, sounds like you've really delved into the market and concept a lot more than me and discovered some challenges I wouldn't have thought about, but now you say them they definitely make sense.

And thanks for the feedback about the google docs wiki idea.

  26. 1

If you want to build a profitable business, then the opinions of others on here probably isn't going to give you the right answer.

Why not build 12 landing pages this week and test them out? Then build the idea that gets the most traction.

    1. 1

Do you say that because opinions are not as good an indicator as building a landing page/identifying the target market and testing it?

That's not a bad idea Kyle, I'm open to doing it.

      1. 2

Opinions are a good indicator if you can ask a large enough group of potential users for each idea. But even then, someone telling you something is a good idea is very different to them entering their credit card details and paying you money.

        1. 1

Someone telling you something is a good idea is very different to them entering their credit card details and paying you money.

Couldn't agree more, Great point, thanks Kyle.

  27. 1

Are you looking to make it into a business or just for the joy of building it? If just for the joy of building it, then maybe you are the best judge.

As a business, I think google docs powered wiki is a good idea. Google docs is great for collaborating on individual docs but when you need to put together a list to hand over during onboarding a new employee/for knowledge management, there is no way I could find to build a good list. I would like to be able to prioritize it the way I want, make different list of docs etc for different purposes.

I started using Tettra and am paying for it which works well for the list but comes nowhere close to the power of editing/collaborating that Google docs offers.

Twitch for entrepreneurs also sounds interesting but I am guessing some people's work is going to be more interesting than others. What specific pain point do you think it can solve?

I am not a developer so can't comment on the other ones.

    1. 1

Thanks Sanket. I would want it to be a business/profitable.

I'll note down what you've said about Google docs, I agree with you about creating a good list, it was a problem I was running into.

It would be great if I could chat to you about that further if I end up going with that one.

In terms of the twitch concept, I thought that it might be interesting alternative content, and my current problem is twofold:

      1. That some people are posting to twitch and youtube but I can't always find it.
      2. I want to see what people are doing in their work so I can improve.
      1. 1

Yeah happy to chat about both the ideas.

I do new product development as a day job, so I could help you with the different questions/perspectives we look at for any new idea.

  28. 1

Google docs powered wiki sounds promising

    1. 1

Thanks Denis, are you using anything similar as a wiki at the moment?

      1. 1

I used Confluence in the past. Right now I use just that - a bunch of google docs in a shared folder.
