January 2022 Income Report: $612.14

Happy 2022! This is my first income report of the year. I did it all last year and it was a lot of fun so I'm doing it again this year. We're off to a slow start (which is similar to last year).

What was different in January?

I mentioned it before, but in October my wife and I had our first baby. I'm still adjusting quite a bit to the schedule changes and finding time to work on side projects. I've found the best time right now is after everyone is asleep.

Though I also have significantly less time than I did before. On a good night, I get 2hrs to work on stuff. Most nights though it's 30-45mins. Therefore I've decided to put all my focus into my biggest project: a TypeScript course.

Nothing to share yet but do keep an eye out :)

The first part will be a free email course, which we'll use to build an email list and get feedback on course materials. If you're interested in being a beta reader, let me know!

Side Income Breakdown

  • $92.14 from @egghead-io royalties
  • $520.00 from Vim for VSCode course sales (before fees) on Convert Kit Commerce
  • $0.00 from Vim for VSCode course sales (before fees) on Flurly
  • $0.00 job board

Total: $612.14

Total (year-to-date): $612.14

Goal for the Year

Last year, I set a goal for $20k and hit ~$37k. This year, I'm setting a goal for $50k.

How did you solve the chicken and egg problem in this? i guess its hard to get paid advertisements early.

        1. 1

Yeah, still working on it but I post jobs that I find to fill the board.

Congrats on the baby! It's awesome that you have been able to continue on side projects even this soon after its arrival. I feel like kids are the best prioritization/productivity tool, since I value my time and energy much higher than before the kid.

Do you have any plans/expectations how to reach $50k this year? I am asking, because last year there were two or three one-time things that generated most of the profits.

Thanks Matt! Oh man. I couldn't agree more. It forces me to cut out all the distractions. I wish I could have had this focus before the kid 😂

Good question! My thinking is to focus on courses (TS and my Vim course). Once I get the TS course out (maybe by July?), that should help me reach the goal. Then I also plan to hopefully extend the Vim course and add an advanced version.

I'm also trying referral bonuses since that brought in a lot last year. I'm testing it out with https://www.talentdrop.com/ - here's what I'm trying:

      1. find a job referral on Talent Drop
      2. post it to my job board
      3. put my email as the place to apply
      4. if candidate is strong, refer them through Talent Drop

I don't know how successful this will be though. Most of the candidates I'm getting are low-quality.

What about you? Do you have any revenue goals for the year and if so, how do you plan to get there?

      1. 1

I wish I could have had this focus before the kid 😂
        Exactly.

Good luck with the courses. However the amount of money in recruiting is CRAZY.

Currently I am an employee (Product Designer) who used to do some freelance work. Neither particularly fulfills me. For last few months I am drawn to IndieHacking and the creative freedom that it offers. I am thinking about starting something own or helping other IndieHackers. My goal for this year is to earn the first dollar by creating some value for others in a way that would fulfill me. Nothing concrete on my mind yet.

YES! I know. It's hard to get though, at least I thought it'd be easier.

That's awesome! Well when you do figure out what you'll make, we'll all be here to support you!

Thank you, I appreciate the encouragement 🙂
