Join a Mastermind

One of the first things I did when I went full-time on my business in 2020 was to join a mastermind peer group (thanks, Rob Walling/Microconf!) . I'm so glad I did.

The biggest challenge I've had in switching from employee to entrepreneur has been mental. As an employee, I've always had a boss to pass questions to. I'm pretty self-directed, but just knowing I could punt some tough calls up the chain was oddly reassuring.

As an entrepreneur, there's nobody "up the chain" to tell you whether you're making the right decision or not. You have to make hundreds of little decisions every week and they really start to weigh on you.

That's where having a mastermind group has come in. While we don't make decisions for each other, just knowing that others out there have your back and might help share the cognitive load has been huge.

If you're going to make the leap in 2021 or you just want to take your side hustle more seriously, surround yourself with people who are doing the same.

Entrepreneurship can be isolating, scary, and exhausting. Having a few people to go through it together with makes a huge difference.

Didn't know about microcontroller masterminds! Super useful tip thanks for sharing :)

I did the one from MicroConf: https://microconf.com/masterminds

Three of us were matched up, but one guy left and we added another friend. MicroConf is very hands off, but they did help us get it kicked off.

How does the microconf matching work? Is there a way to handle situations where a mastermind group isn't working out?

        It's super hands-off, so no.

You basically pay them a few bucks and they CC you on an email with two other people who might be a good fit. They also send some basic tips for masterminding, but that's it.

I think the philosophy is that good groups will either gel and continue, or they'll fall apart and everyone moves on.

There are some more hands on mastermind services, but I haven't tried any of them.

    How did you find yours?

Absolutely. Always looking for friends :)
