What do you think work will look like in the next decade?
The gig economy will take over?
More of short term contracts and less of full-time employment?
Everyone will have their own business?
Listening to the last episode of the IH podcast, they mentioned that work-life balance and remote working significantly reduce growth. I did my research and find the same results.
Considering the fact that technology will make production of material goods cheaper and cheaper, I see two main types of company in the future.
Company whose main goal is the health and happiness of employees will go remote and ask for less working hours. Those type of companies will have up to 100 employees who accept a lower than market pay to work at their conditions.
Then you will have company whose main goal is growth and impact on the world. Those kind of companies will be massive (hundreds of thousands of people) and have a traditional model (physical headquarters and subsidiaries).
Then you will have superqualified professionals, the top 1-5% in a specifical job, that will be extremely high paid and able to choose their favorite way of working (remote or physical).
I think it will be split into generalist and specialists.
Generalist will either be a founder/employee and they will hire specialists to do work that needs to be done.
The generalists most likely will be close to each other, specialists will be remote.
So imagine a SaaS company, the founders could be a marketer and a developer. The development team may be hired locally and the marketer will hire contractors for specialised areas such as ads, copywriting and content.
Development team may also hire specialists for certain parts of the stack like dev ops.
Skills will need to shift quickly and people who are able to learn and adapt will thrive. A fixed mindset will be career ending.
