Sharing some of the strategies that work for me and hoping to learn from other indie hackers. These are some things that have worked for me building a startup or validating a problem/solution fit.
Review sites (G2, Capterra, etc) -> search your competitors, read their reviews, and understand their target market by looking at the titles of people leaving reviews
Sign up for product trials or demos -> understand their sales process, onboarding, and have a look at their product to better understand where you can differentiate and add value
Run user interviews on Respondent or User Interviews -> You can learn a lot from the customers of your competitors - what they love, hate, what they want to see, and where they actually see the value
SEO research with SEMrush, Ahrefs, SEranking, etc ->
-You can understand which keywords competitors rank highly for and understand how you can position your content
-See which paid keywords they’re paying for
-Understand where they are getting the most backlink traffic from
-See which blog topics are performing better and find your unique content positioning
See which roles your competitors are hiring for ->
You can understand their approach to sales, marketing, customer success, product, etc much better by who they are looking for and the specific role descriptions
Use crunchbase -> I like to keep an eye on tools in our industry to understand which ones are securing rounds of funding, how they are growing, features in the news, etc.
Read competitors technical documentation and whitepapers -> this has been really helpful from a product development standpoint
Subscribe to competitors newsletters & communities -> this helps keep tabs on new features, rounds of funding, community events, relevant webinars, etc
Anyone else have any other ideas?
