I think many on here are probably familiar with the website Key Values (https://www.keyvalues.com/) for information from tech employers on culture. I'm wondering if there's an opportunity to build something similar but something more B2C for consumers to research information on whether a specific brand fits in with certain criteria they might have for choosing to buy from somewhere.
The thesis is consumers are making more ethical/environmental/political driven purchasing decisions but there's nothing out there to help people figure out whether a brand fits in.
First off, @rosiesherry just sent me this, and it made my day! (I'm the founder of Key Values 👋)
Second, I think this is a really interesting concept. I don't have a sense for how many people make decisions this way and how big the "market" is, but there are no doubt people who boycott Amazon, Uber, and SoulCycle for ethical/environmental/political reasons. There is so much attention around climate change, too. I know some people who have vowed to stop flying and two of my closest girlfriends started buying skin products from a company that only uses biodegradable packaging (or something like that?).
I think a database of this type of information will definitely be interesting to a lot of people, and if put together well, will be something that people enthusiastically share (aka it checks the virality box for sure), but you may want to consider what your appetite is for political dissension? Or perhaps you can find a way to step into this territory w/o stirring the pot too much. (Or maybe you don't mind and actually enjoy that kind of thing?!)
You'll also want to think about what your business model will be. I imagine companies would eventually pay to be listed on your site?
Lots to flush out still, but an interesting idea to continue digging into for another few days/weeks/months! Apologies for the rambling above (🙈), and good luck!!!
That's a great idea! There are sites like AlternativeTo that crowdsource more ethical software recommendations, but I have not seen anything that focuses in on the "key values" of a platform. Everyone weighs certain values differently, so creating a resource that could help people find solutions that fit within their particular paradigm would be awesome.
