My domain is 19 days old, DR 0. I needed to pick which niche pages to build.
Bing gave me the hint. Over two days, "thumbnail maker" got 73 impressions at
position 7.4 and a 2.74% CTR. "brotato thumbnail generator" got 2 impressions
at position 3 and a click. The head term brought 36x the impressions and half
the click rate.
So, niche pages. But which niches?
Not the ones with low Keyword Difficulty. KD measures backlinks to the pages
that currently rank — it says nothing about who those pages belong to. A
keyword can sit at KD 0 and be served entirely by domains you can't touch for
two years.
The check that works is one filter in Ahrefs Keywords Explorer: Lowest DR, up
to 20, in top 10. It keeps only the keywords where a site as small as yours is
already on page one.
Six niches, same settings:
Minecraft 13 keywords 12,000 searches/mo
stream 2 420
reaction 1 80
podcast 1 60
faceless 0 0
Fortnite 25 keywords 16,000/mo — 0 survive the filter
Fortnite has the most volume of anything I tested, every term at KD 0, and not
one keyword where a small site ranks. I already had a Fortnite page built. It
is aimed at a market I can't win this year.
Fifteen minutes of filtering. Five pages I didn't write.
Two weeks from now I'll know whether the Minecraft page moves. If it doesn't,
the hypothesis was wrong and I lost a day instead of six.
