Landing page test: assessing traction

Hi guys - I understand that one way of validating your idea is to have a landing page that describes your product offering with the CTA asking people to join a waitlist. If you do get traction through this page (perhaps via promoting the link through relevant online groups), how many signups do you think should be enough to validate your idea? 10? 100? I guess this would be a function of how much (relevant) exposure your landing page has had, but I'm curious to know how traction numbers should be evaluated.

I don't know the answer to this one (and have been thinking about it myself) but I wonder if its helpful to think about . . .

-a) how much effort it takes to join the waitlist (ie. is it a low level gesture of interest)

    b) the nature of the idea (narrow appeal - smaller waitlist might reflect the specific appeal of the idea) vs a broader idea where you're looking for broad appeal . . .

    c) Quality of the signups - is there any way to qualify the quality of the signups?
