Launch Post-Mortem

On Sunday I launched a product I've been working on for 2+ years, https://routepath.app.

My primary launch platforms were Product Hunt (producthunt.com/posts/routepath), the mailing list I had built up using Product Hunt Ship (~40 emails), and my personal Twitter (~500 followers).

I thought I'd share some of my findings, so here's a couple of things I learned:

  • Really nail down that value statement. This is probably obvious, but don't assume people will read the wall of text you write describing your product.
  • Set up Terms & Conditions and Privacy Policy. This is a blocker for some people, and wasn't even something that had crossed my mind.
  • Don't forget to add your analytics tools. I did and lost a day of insights.
  • I read an article that said the best time to launch is Sunday at 1 AM. This seems weird, but it kinda makes sense, and it looks like it worked pretty well. I used Product Hunt Ship's "scheduled launch" feature so I didn't have to stay up late to do it either.

At the time of posting this Routepath has 131 upvotes and 6 comments (most of which are me). The launch actually went pretty smoothly all things considered, and I even got my first signup out of it. I had been dreading this day for so long, but honestly it was kinda awesome.

Congrats on the launch, and thank you for putting these notes together. Very useful.
