Launched Collate: Offline-first AI PDF Reader for Mac

I grew up in Bulgaria, where my second-hand iPhone sparked my passion for technology and showed me what's possible when powerful tools get into people's hands.
Today, I'm launching Collate—a fully offline, AI-powered PDF reader and summarizer for Mac. It lets you instantly summarize, chat with, and deeply understand PDFs without ever sending your files to the cloud.
I built Collate because I believe knowledge tools should be private, fast, and free. It's my first step toward a bigger vision: reshaping how we interact with information using local-first AI.

Quick question: do you see Collate as something that could eventually handle more visual PDFs (like portfolios, style guides, etc.), or is the focus mainly on text-heavy docs for now? The tool seems promising. What are the main ICPs?
Professionals, self-learners, students - anyone dealing with PDFs really!
For a person who deals with files a lot, the offline feature is really too important, and I often encounter such a situation, especially the iPhone signal is really bad.
Would love to know more about your use case and how you find Collate useful!
On the subway and train, I often have a bad signal, and because I am not used to reading any text when I am on the train, I can't quickly scan the PDF and answer my customers, and I feel that Collate can help me solve some urgent problems when I am on a business trip or commute.

Thanks! Multiple challenges - local inference is not trivial. And then spreading the word and building a community I still struggle with

For now it only works with text. Meaning images and scanned PDF are not processed. Tables are hard… Will be an ongoing improvement. Multimodal support coming in the future!

Already has some shortcuts support:
cmd + M for chat
cmd + T add a new file
cmd + S show/hide sidebar
Will add more!
3. Any plans for a one-time purchase model? Many of us prefer that over subscriptions for tools like this.
The app is completely free atm. There will always be a free version

Huge congrats on the launch! 🔥 Offline-first is underrated — I think a lot of people underestimate how valuable it is for privacy-focused users.
I’d personally love to see features like:
- Highlight → instant summary
- Export summaries to Notion or Obsidian

Focusing on MacOS for now, but will definitely work on Windows further down the track
That’s awesome to hear — I think highlights → summaries is the real game-changer.
As for my workflow: after summarizing, I usually push insights to Notion for reference, and sometimes Obsidian if I’m connecting it to a broader idea map.
Maybe an “Export to Markdown” option could help both sides?
