Launched on Product Hunt after 4 years

I've been building Career Vault (www.careervault.io) since 2020 to be the best remote job board out there, and I've finally launched it on Product Hunt: https://www.producthunt.com/posts/career-vault

Check it out, ask me questions, and upvote it if you like it.

Prior to this launch, we grew to:

  • 50k monthly unique visitors
  • 15.5k user signups
  • 20k newsletter signups
  • 19k LinkedIn followers

Still got a long way to go to become a significant player in the remote work space, but I'm steadily climbing!

    Congratulations! !
Question: Knowing what you know now and if you had to start over from the beginning. What are a few things that you would do different now versus then. In particular making people aware of your solution and gaining visibility.

I would have focused on SEO when first building the site because I had to tear down most of the infrastructure to make it workable for SEO plans later. That would have set me 3 years ahead of where I am now.

But that also would have required me to not get discouraged early on. I was jumping around working on other products that were not a two-sided marketplace because I wanted to get paid sooner for the things I built. I always felt like I could make this job board the best for job seekers (still working on it), but I got discouraged too easily.

Congratulations! Is Product Hunt the only platform that you launched on? I really like the colors design in your website. I am curious about how do you get all the company info at the first place? How do you review all the information that user post since I currently work in UGC platform base startup. Anyway, the website looks very nice!

Nope, Product Hunt was not the only place and was not my focus because the audience is mostly indie hackers like us and not really job seekers + hiring companies. I launched Career Vault on Reddit a few years ago and that brought in a lot more relevant traffic.

I scrape the company info from the career pages of companies, so they are all directly from the source (whatever the internal recruiter/hiring manager posts). It’s not really moderated atm but I’ll set some filters in to clean it cuz I’m noticing some non-English listings and listings from agencies.

I implemented some restrictions for people who pay for featured postings because there have been scams posted in the past. But I also manually check the posts and remove them if they are suspicious.

Thanks! The color theme is derived from Catppuccin.

Does building SEO helps on user growth? I just launch my product and plan to build SEO?

Depends on what your product is. If it’s a SaaS with high-value contracts, you should focus on lead gen and sales. If it’s a product that depends on high traffic (like a job board because more traffic means more value for companies who post job ads) or low-cost pricing, then it’s ultra useful and is the way to go imo. The results will be long-lasting vs. paying for ads.

I see. Thank you very much for your detailed answer and sharing.

How did you launch initially? 50k monthly users is impressive.

    1. 2

Posting on Reddit and Facebook, mostly. A decent fraction of it is organic now since I started focusing on SEO in December (I was taking a break from the project for a couple years in between)

Do you think posting on facebook is import? I havn't been there in a long time, am I missing an opportunity there?

        1. 2

I don't think it's that helpful for SaaS products, but at the time I just wanted to reach an audience of job seekers that were a bit older (and further along in their careers). The posts I made actually brought in my first and largest customer.

I wouldn't put much effort into it for growth because it only brings in temporary spikes in traffic. It was great for idea validation, though.

    Congratulations on the launch !

Site feedback: the "more filters" needs to be better adjusted for mobile phones in both layouts

Not sure what you mean by that... Send me a screenshot if you have a moment? demi@careervault.io
