I shipped Surfboard publicly yesterday, June 23rd. This is the honest debrief.
What is Surfboard?
Async standup tool. Standalone web app — no Slack required. Teams post their did/doing/blockers whenever, see each other's updates on a shared board, blockers stay flagged until resolved. Flat-rate pricing: Free (up to 3 members), Pro ($8/mo, unlimited members), Business ($24/mo, 5 teams). No per-seat math. No credit card for free.
I built it because I was paying $40/month for a Slack bot that half my team had muted. The product exists because the problem is real.
The numbers (honest)
Product Hunt: single-digit upvotes as of this morning
Signups: single digits
Revenue: $0
This is day 1 of a solo indie launch with no prior audience, no mailing list, no co-founder to split the work. Small numbers are the expected starting point, not a signal to panic.
What went well
The product is solid. Onboarding takes under 3 minutes — I timed it. The board view is clean, dark mode works, and the magic link auth removes a whole category of friction that I didn't realize was annoying until it was gone.
The pricing messaging landed. The comparison table (Surfboard at $8 flat vs Geekbot/Standuply per seat) gets immediate nods when people actually read it. The value prop is clear to anyone who's been burned by per-seat pricing at a growing team.
Submitted to both Product Hunt and MicroLaunch on the same day. Decent coverage for a one-person operation.
What didn't go as planned
Reach. The cold start is real when you don't have an existing audience. I underestimated how much distribution matters on launch day — you can have a solid product page and almost no one sees it without people actively pushing it in the first few hours.
The PH algorithm rewards early engagement hard. I didn't have a warm list of IH/PH friends primed to upvote in hour one, and it showed. That's not a complaint — it's just how the game works, and I'll plan better next time.
Also: building solo means every hour on marketing is an hour not on the product. I probably shipped a few features the week before launch that nobody cares about yet, instead of spending that time building distribution.
What's next
Roadmap in rough priority order:
Slack integration — not a requirement, but teams who live in Slack want the digest pushed there. It's coming.
Blocker threads — let teammates comment on blockers directly in the board, not in a side channel.
Streak insights — light gamification. Who's been consistent? Useful for retros without feeling surveillance-y.
Team invite flow — currently you add people manually. A shareable invite link would cut friction significantly.
None of this is locked. If something above resonates more than the rest, I'd genuinely like to know.
Question for the IH community
For those of you who've been through a solo PH launch with a small (or zero) existing audience: what moved the needle in the first week that you didn't expect? And what did you do that felt like traction but wasn't?
Not looking for generic "post on Reddit" advice — I mean the specific thing that got your first 10 paying customers outside of your immediate network.
Surfboard is live at https://dailywave.app — free plan, no credit card, 3-minute setup. Happy to answer questions in the comments.
