As a "safe" transition from freelancing to running my own startup, I've been thinking of releasing an e-signature SaaS. I have it already built (mostly) and would like some feedback on what you think the possibilities are on this. I know the market is thoroughly saturated and I do have a few other ideas on more "original" things to startup but my thoughts are I can draw a fair amount of customers that are new to the market with a quality product that matches most of the features of incumbents. Thoughts?
Definitely ‘niche down’ to a specific industry or workflow or platform ecosystem. DocuSign, Adobe, HelloSign, Conga, etc have saturated the horizontal markets. But there’s oodles of opportunity if you choose the right target, price point and value prop. Also consider that eSig providers must establish trust especially for large enterprises so maybe better to start with SMBs. And if you branch outside of the US there’s a ton of various eSig regulations and standards to navigate.

I’d recommend focusing on particular niche industry that users e-signature software. Taylor your feature set and, more importantly, your marketing, to that group.
"quality product that matches most of the features of incumbents."
Define your own unique value proposition, do it better than the pre-existing products, and you'll earn a dedicated share of the market.
