Launching MealGenie, a ChatGPT-based recipes app.

Hey IndieHackers! I'm excited to share with you my latest project, MealGenie.ai (https://mealgenie.ai) – the AI-powered recipe assistant that empowers people to make healthier and more sustainable food choices.

Last year, I launched an NFT company called CreatorMachine that generated 2M in annual revenue. But after the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, I got a major itch to build side projects in AI.

I ideated around several ideas before landing on MealGenie – a solution to my own struggles with keeping up with specialized diets (like keto and vegan) while cooking for myself.

I hacked out the initial MVP in 15 days. Today, MealGenie combines the power of OpenAI's ChatGPT model and Stable Diffusion to create recipes on the fly. By cutting out a significant amount of human input to generate recipes, MealGenie.ai stands out as a unique solution that leverages AI to deliver delicious and nutritious recipes to our users.

Some struggles I had during this build:

  • I had never used Figma to design before, and it took me a while to understand how to use UI kits 😅

  • This is my first project built with the help of ChatGPT and Github Copilot. It took me a while to get used to the new workflow.

  • I had never implemented SQS in production before, so it was new to learn how to production-ize it.

Some future ideas I got from initial user feedback:

  • Allow users to swap out ingredients from recipes (e.g. "remove onions and carrots")

  • Allow the user to regenerate image through providing a new prompt

  • Letting users follow each other to see what recipes or prompts they use

  • More powerful search and filter features

In conclusion..

Thanks, IndieHacker community for your support! Try and generate your first recipe on there and give us feedback on how to make it more valuable for you or your family/friends. I appreciate your feedback and look forward to shipping faster and launching more AI apps this year!

Feel free to ask any questions or give me direct feedback here or via Twitter (@stanleycyang), and I would love to connect.
