Although most of us have youtube as our goto Learning or Entertainment (Business or Pleasure) destination, I feel it has been a store of quality leads. I am focusing on the whole world of comments section.
With years of presence, it is a community of not so co-ordinated users, like a forum would be. I have seen some people voice these demands and needs with their comments. Although it may be meant for the owner of video, the demand is open to be fullfilled by any video or web link helping their cause.
Some Question - Answers for you to gain a deeper perspective
Q) So, why not you simply create a video/channel and get to those users?
- Because not all answers can be given in a video. Video remains a one way communication & a passive one. (minus the reply to comments live streaming)
- Making those users reach your video is another line of business for Google.
- You reaching customers via comments is a sales technique, not marketing
- With uploading a new video, you can only hope to gain customers who will be seeing your video in future. If the topic is not unique, new video uploaded faces the competition from peers. But if the problem is still relevant...comments section is where you have your prospective customers. You might be new, commenting users may not
Q) Isn't manually searching & commenting on videos a tedius task?
- It is. So Youtube has made API's available to us. Its one part of their business to bill as per usage of YouTube Data API v3 and other API's
Q) Great, so whats stopping the businesses from taking this route?
- Ironically Youtube is. In attempts to prevent spamming, misleads & violations of other policy guidelines youtube or its AI will label frequent, same comments as spam and the purpose of reaching the audience never serves.
Q) Back to square one. What's the point?
- If businesses aren't missing an opportunity that never was, Google is! Not just because of earning of API usage.
I say for my case:
I have made an Android app, will be hosted on Google PlayStore. It will run billing API of Google as per their terms (30% revenue) & even ad engine(Google admob). If I am to get leads from YouTube into my app, the user will still be in the Google ecosystem, with potential to be a spending more than plain youtube viewer/customer.
I am not sure if Google has already facilitated this mechanism flawlessly, by simply not marking spams as part of their policy document. But the worries of many marketers paint an unwelcoming picture.
- Would this be termed as serving preferentially?
- Should they introduce another authorization mechanism to ensure such user is within their ecosystem? (each has its own entry point & daily functioning checks for compliance)
These remain the open ended questions, for which I would like to hear your opinion.
Why not mention this directly to the big boss: Google?
If the concern, as a community of fellow makers here at IH is unanimous, I feel it will have some weightage and will reach the appropriate authority.
(Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with Google or YouTube and have no intention of promoting them on this forum. Nor am I objecting existing policies)
