The power of Notion + Google Sheets + Niche Micro SaaS = $2500 MRR

Leandro is now betting on another niche around Coda.

    The Leandro here ✋

Notion2Sheets is a Google Workspace Add-On that runs on the sidebar in Google Sheets and allows users to sync Notion databases with Google Sheets among other things.

It has been around since May 31, 2021 and has almost 15k users.

Super niche tool that pays the bills!

Pretty impressive, Leandro! Thanks for sharing! :) Would love to know more about your experience regarding Coda Packs - I think you must be amongst the early builders here as it's a recently launched marketplace?

      1. 2

        Thanks Mariam!

I have built 23 Packs so far (which is the name of integrations in Coda), for platforms like Notion, Airtable, Bubble and Webflow among others. The Coda team has done an amazing job with the SDK so it is not difficult to build them, but Coda user based is smaller compared to Notion so things will take some time to take off 🤞

What is nice is that Coda takes care of billing and everything, so you can focus on building, set a price and promote.

Nice! I had been exploring documentation for coda packs recently and you are absolutely right - they have done a brilliant job here. I guess the smaller user base issue will be there for sometime but overall Coda seems quite powerful and innovative and so hopefully we will see an increase in adoption.

          1. 2

            I am betting on that!

One question Leandro, how do you store the user API token generated by Google Sheet and Notion?
How do you store it safely?

I did some research but didn't a lot of resources about this.

              1. 2

I encrypt the tokens and refresh tokens before storing them and then decrypt when using, there are more advanced options as well with rotating keys, something I want to explore!

Thank you for taking the time to respond.
Do you use the same encryption key for all users or do you use one encryption key for each user?

I completely agree that your product is something that pulls users. I saw a couple of your tweets online but never bothered to actually checkout Notion2Sheets. But one day, I used an extension called Bardeen to scrape leads to Notion.

I wanted a way to move this from notion to google docs. Found you through Google and it was so easy to use.

I wish I could discover such pain points :)

      All the best.

Most of the time it's just luck, so keep trying things and reading and listening to users and I am sure you will do 💪

Really impressive. Congrats on your success)

Really impressive. Congrats on your success! You say that users pulled your product rather than you pushing it. But how did they discover it? That information could be beneficial to us indie hackers. (:

I think he mentioned that he’s active in groups where Notion users hang. The product was good and what the people actually needed, so mentioning it casually in the right groups & in the right way probably worked.

    2. 2

I was super active in Facebook groups, Twitter, Reddit, Telegram and more at the beginning, hanging out in the same places my users were and helping answering questions and occasionally mentioning Notion2Sheets when appropriate, that really helped at the start.

Then most of the traffic right now comes from organic search :)

That's great, Leandro. However, for a product that might not have one specific niche audience and is still navigating PMF what do you recommend in terms of gaining traction. I'd love for you to check out https://geeksandexperts.com/ I think your experience would be super valuable to other indie hackers!

You at least need to be able to define your user / customer persona!

          1. 1

Makes sense for sure! Earlier, I was talking to everyone and therefore no one.

            1. 1

The more specific you can be at the beginning the better, then you can expand your user base but at first you need to niche down.

              1. 2

I really learned this the long and hard way with my experts on-demand marketplace. There are so many use cases that I could think of that it got tricky to narrow down a specific niche. As of now, we do have a target audience of indie creators who want to get quick advice on shipping, scaling, or selling their startups! Fingers crossed we are able to get some traction and generate early revenue.

This is awesome to see niche based platform products picking up. Great product, great market fit and right time.

    Great interview!!

Thanks! I launched the first version of Notion2Sheets 2 weeks after the release of the Notion official API 😅, it was definitely important :)

I think it is a must for us indie hackers, it's a great source of problems to solve, insights about pain points and what works and what doesn't.
