Learned to code and launched an app today!

TL;DR Had a bad time splitting the bill at a restaurant with a big group of friends. Learned to code. Built an app. Launched it on Product Hunt today.

So about a year ago, a big group of friends, about 12 of us, went out to dinner to a tapas restaurant and when the bill came it became a nightmare of itemising and bickering. Some people wanted to split the bill down the middle and some wanted everyone to itemise it because they had much more or less than others. It took about half an hour to sort out and totally ruined the vibe of the evening.

I could not code. But I thought it was time I should. So, heavily inspired by Pieter Levels, Indie Hackers, and the maker community on Twitter, I learned how and over the course of year side-built an app that could help both people who wanted to split down the middle and those that wanted to itemise the bill at the same time.

It was HARD. But looking back it's amazing how seemingly insurmountable concepts became second nature. I learned by taking HarvardX's CS50 course and a bunch of iOS native courses on Udemy, mostly by DevSlopes. I finished CS50 but didn't finish any of the others. I just took the info I needed and used it for my app. I think that was the best way. Of course, I'm still learning, every day, currently: React Native.

I took big gaps between coding sprints and all in all this took way longer than it should have. The next app and the next versions of this one are already in development and finally now, coding is actually becoming enjoyable. Building for myself is infinitely better than building for anyone else.
