I have been trying to engage in Twitter. The current aim is to find 20-100 to try signing up. It started off as searching key phrase that matches my startup (Chrome Extension to track online reading). Naturally, I looked for terms like "student", "tech", "data nerd", "chrome extension", etc. But the conversation felt a little spammy and out of context.
In that process, I got a reply from TurnOffTheLight, because one of the user I jumped into talking with was talking about them (I found him that user with the search "Chrome Extension").
Their account has 11.3k followers and been around 2013. That number of followers feel light years ahead, but they seem to have grown quite heavily out of Twitter. What they do is to look for people who are talking about "dark theme" especially the ones who are complaining apps not having dark theme (like Facebook). Then they come in and say, "hey, you can do that with our extension!" I really like that approach. It's simple. There's a problem and you offer solution. As an outsider, I didn't know dark theme was such a big thing, but there were actually many people who are talking about it (like 1 every 3 minutes). That's their secret from interacting with people.
My lesson is you have to find not only user characteristic but also types of conversations they're having. That's especially true on Twitter. Once you can figure that specific terms, it becomes much more natural.
Do you have any specific keywords you're searching for to find potential users?
PS: If you want to try TurnOffTheLight, here's a link. It's not my app, but pretty cool nevertheless.

Interesting, thank you for sharing!
It's a great advice. I wonder how good it works for pages with a low/super low number of followers. If you are going to apply it, I would love to get an update in the future :D
For sure! The beauty of Twitter is you can reply to people directly regardless of follow/follower status. You can still search by conversation, and jump into the conversation.
