Lessons from launching my tool on product hunt ✅

If I had to use one word to describe our product hunt launch, it would definitely be a “rollercoaster”.

As a thanks to all of you for supporting ruttl and making it the #2 Product of the Week, we are going to share all our learnings and how you can prepare for your own Product Hunt Launches.

First things first, let’s start with the exciting stats of the launch -

🚀 #1 Product of the day
🥈 #2 Product of the week
⚡ Over 2500 website traffic
🙎 200+ sign ups
💵 10+ paid new subscribers

Things we did right

  1. Your product is never going to be perfect enough to launch. That’s what we did and as a result, launched after 2.5 years. (whereas we technically were ready to launch 6-7 months back)

  2. No matter how much you test, things are going to break on launch day. So just keep calm and focus on doing the best

  3. Double check if tracking systems are in place. Any type of launch generates lots of traffic. If you don’t have proper analytics, you will lose out on that data. You can also integrate tools like Hotjar to make this better.

  4. Chase customer feedback. Product hunt is a perfect place to get real time feedback from your customers. In the coming days after launch, study your product usage data. See which features are not being used. Are there any drop off points in the product? Is there anything that your users want? etc.

  5. Setup a task tracker. Add three lists - Before launch, During launch and After launch. Then add all relevant tasks as cards. This way you won't miss out on anything. (We initially tried doing this with docs, but realized that we were missing out on a lot of important tasks. So we just created a simple sheet instead. Every time a task was done, we just changed it's color from red to green. Simple and effective.)

Tips if you're launching soon

  • Preparing marketing materials (email sequence, social media posts, PH posts) before hand. If you keep this for last minute, chances are you might deploy things with error.
  • Gathering support from communities. I can't emphasize more on the importance of this tip!
  • Testing if the coupon code is working properly. If you choose to give visitors from Product hunt a discount, make sure you yourself test it's payment processing. You don't want a failing coupon on the D-day.
  • Ensuring there are no "major" active bugs. Test brutally 2 days before launch and then don't deploy anything new, which can potentially break the product. We did this mistake but luckily fixed it just before launching at 12.
  • Seeking the help of a hunter, who can push your product to their audiences. A special thanks to Kevin, who helped us launch!
  • Investing the time for making good content
  • Shooting a simple yet custom video ad can go long way in increasing engagement.

I hope this post helps you launch effectively! But, if there's any doubt or you need advice, feel free to drop it in the comments and I'll help you out. 🙂

Cheers,
Harsh! 💯

  2. 2

Absolutely! The product is never going to be perfect. After pushing our launch dates two times for Curatora. Now we are ready to launch it in early August. Hoping for the best.

    1. 1

Sorry I got busy with work and wasn't really active here, how did the launch go?

  3. 2

Thanks, the tips really help. After I launch my own project, I realize that ones have to not only put much effort into developing a project but to promote it.

    1. 1

You're absolutely right, how you promote your product is equally important because your product might be perfect but unless you have users there is no point. So, it's important to keep on engaging on different platforms and to work on building a community.

  4. 2

Congrats on the launch! We are hopefully a few weeks out from posting on Product Hunt so I really appreciate the insights.

    1. 1

Glad to be of help, did you have your launch?

    2. 1

Good luck with the upcoming launch! We are too fastening our belts to launch soon.

  5. 2

First of all, congrats of your launch.

At the same timec I think this could be a lot better if you provided your first-hand experience. This all sounds good but it would be a whole lot more useful if you provided context (for eg with the hunter, how many people you contacted before you found a successful one, etc).

  6. 2

Thanks for sharing your learnings, Harsh. Congrats on the launch.
Would love to stay connected as I build my own tool for a PH launch.

    1. 2

      Thank you so much!
sorry for the delay, I got busy with work and couldn't stay active here.

Sure, when is the launch? and what product are you working on right now?

      1. 1

No worries, I understand. The product is scheduled for launch in Q1 of 2023.
We are building a talent destination platform for founders to get access to advice from domain experts for a fee or for free. You can check it out at Geeks and Experts

  8. 2

Good read... Congrats on your launch. I am happy you posted this cause I have intentions to launch my product which is still in development on PH.

    1. 2

      Thanks man!
That's great, all the best for your product!
Hope to read about your insights soon :)

  9. 2

@harshvijay this is huge brother! You are killing it!

  10. 1

Thanks for sharing and congrats. How do you get initial momentum after the post and what do you think is right amount of engagement in the early few hours to feature on front page.

  11. 1

Thank you for sharing these lessons learned!
I have a question regarding launch analytics, what are some of the most important metrics you are tracking?
    Thank you!

  12. 1

thank you a lot, its really useful!

    one question
where did you look for beta testers?

  13. 1

Would love to see an example of your video ad and hear how much time you put in. Thinking of doing something similar myself.

  14. 1

Interesting, thanks! Yeah, setting up a task tracker is huge — there are SOOO many things to remember as launch day approaches. Keep them organized. I like todoist for personal tasks and monday for bigger projects.

Btw, I've heard that hunters are a thing of the past. Why did you choose to go with one and how did if affect your launch?

  15. 1

That's awesome! Nice work. Regarding your video tip ... Does this need to be high quality? Could it just be an easy 1-minute video of yourself at your desk? I tend to enjoy the more authentic ads like that but not sure if that's the best approach?

Also, how were you able to navigate the spam problem on PH?

  16. 1

    Hi Harsh!
Congrats and thanks for your post! We are going to add a new product to PH soon, so appreciate all your advice. How did you find the right hunter and how did you engage in the PH community before your launch? Cheers.

  17. 1

How did you shoot the video ad? Screencast that you produced yourself? Or someboy professionally?

  18. 1

    Good post!
where did the most traffic to the PH come from?
