Lessons in Internet marketing from the original Mad Men

Hey, wrote an article about the ways early advertisers used to get sales. I think there's a ton of value from what they went through, as it was an intensely competitive environment and they were really, really good at what they did.

Here's the list of lessons:

  1. Measure your campaigns (and especially your sales)
  2. Samples, giveaways, and contests work, but only if people have to work for them
  3. Your headline needs to capture the most exciting part of your product
  4. The core of effective copywriting is self-interest: why does your product benefit the customer?
  5. Marketing a product is about making the features seem extraordinary
  6. The difference between a feature and a bug can be a matter of positioning
  7. Your product positioning needs to fit in with existing habits (don't make people do new things)
