Let Me Google Things For You

Hello, my name is swyx and I Google Things For You.

When was the last time you Googled for stuff and couldn't find what you wanted? What was it?

Let me know here and I'll give it a shot!

Oh and if you like the idea and want to get the chrome extension (so it literally integrates right into your google search box) head over here https://www.producthunt.com/upcoming/letusgrepthatforyou.

Let's see how weird you guys get!

Okay swyx@, give me a list of recipe blogs that exclusively offer keto recipes. Small ones that seem to have <1,000 pageviews per day, but that have published new recipes in the last 30 days.

Here are the ones I know about already:

There s a french film I watched years ago (more than 20 I think) that I have very good memories of, but can't remember the title.

All I recall is that it's about a guy who hears someone talk to him through his very old car radio. This starts by being just a nuisance, but it goes up in stakes during the whole film, as he tries to understand how this can be happening (his car repair friend tells him his radio could never be hacked to broadcast a voice so clearly, there would be enormous interference - but there aren't - so he 'must' be hallucinating), until the voice explains him that he has to kill someone or else something really bad will happen.

I also don't remember well if it was a good film or not, it just became a vague memory. Maybe it was a turd, who knows!

I tried various google searches, but couldn't find anything. Curious to see if you can :)

Hi Gui! I'd like to google that for you!

Due to the language barrier, I'm going to take a while with this one and may not find anything. If you think of anything else to look for, you know who to ask!

That was fun, thank you for searching with me!

    Sandorei here,

Is there a red shoe in the back space ?

Weird topic I know lol, but I vividly remember my psychology professor stating a case of borderline schizophrenia in which the subject repeatedly said: "There is no red shoe in the back space".

So I wanted to see if there is anything related to a "red shoe in the back space" scenario anywhere.

    Don't judge lol.

    Cheers!

Hi Sandorei! I googled that for you!

It looks like he was referring to the DSM-5, the case of Bob Naples, who is the "typical schizophrenia prototype". If you want to read the entire anecdote, check out this Google Books link! https://books.google.com/books?id=020sDwAAQBAJ&pg=PA70&lpg=PA70&dq=bob+naples+schizophrenia+no+red+shoe+in+the+back+space&source=bl&ots=JVMlZyqgRv&sig=Q0PUkK0ftWz-YbSHv-P_b8Nq3mM&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj0gKqwm5_XAhVDKiYKHWPSBPIQ6AEILjAB#v=onepage&q=bob naples schizophrenia no red shoe in the back space&f=false

That was fun, thank you for searching with me!

That was fast and accurate. good job swyx!.

Is there any way you could make an AI bot capable of such maneuver ? without any human intervention ( expect the input from the customer of course)

        1. 1

Ha, I assume every big tech company is trying to do that right now.

I'm just taking the human approach and seeing what happens!

Nice project, I'm looking for a magnet that you put on a fridge with the lowest cost and which can gets updated message that I will send on it from the web or computer.

Also reminds me of Biz Stone's Jelly (acqui-hired I think).

Social search is indeed really exciting, and I feel that Quora's search bar + ability to post the question if you don't find an answer may be the real competitor here. Good luck :)

i love that people here have much longer memories than I do and help me with my market research. thanks very much!

There was a company called Aardvark that did this. https://techcrunch.com/2010/02/11/google-acquires-aardvark-for-50-million/

My guess is Google acquired them to neutralize the threat, so lots of potential here!

    1. 2

You hear that? Google? I'm waiting.

      1. 1

ok, swyxggle, send me a list of places where software engineering managers hang out online

        1. 1

Hi CodeForCash! I googled that for you!

"software engineering managers" is very broad. For these kinds of searches you may wish to try identifying one vector and then seeing similar vectors.

For example, if Hacker News is the kind of audience you are looking for, you might try to plug that into a competitive research service like https://www.spyfu.com/seo/competitors/url?query=news.ycombinator.com This gives you Quora, Stackshare, and Stackoverflow as potential leads, and more if you go for the free trial.

That is the bottom up approach.

Generally you can also think about groups of people that "hang out online" in terms of what people do online. Here is a very helpful chart: http://www.yelvington.com/content/02-24-2012/audience-first-and-new-leadership-openings

As you can see, the highest leverage areas are unsurprisingly social networks, search, and email. Targeting these will work well. For a professional orientation you may wish to target LinkedIn professional groups that have open memberships.

That is the top down approach.

That was fun, thank you for searching with me!

          1. 1

For example, can you find me any groups on LinkedIn, Facebook, or other social network websites where specifically, people with the titles "VP engineering", "vp software engineering", "vp software development", "Director of Engineering", "Director of Software Engineering", "CTO" .. congregate? I'm open to Meetups, clubs, subscription gated groups, LinkedIn groups, niche news sites or blogs (Hacker News is too broad), and so forth.

            1. 2

Hi CodeForCash! I googled that for you!

You may wish to think about problems that mainly CTOs and VP Enggs have, and the communities they form around those problems. These tend to be things related to cloud/scaling. So for example, https://www.vmug.com/ is where people who care about VMWare/virtualization meet. A simple search turns up linkedin groups with plenty of senior people (though not necessarily VP/Dirs) https://www.linkedin.com/search/results/groups/?keywords=vmug&origin=SWITCH_SEARCH_VERTICAL

To get ideas around these software communities, you can look at conference sponsors, eg the upcoming AWS Re:invent https://reinvent.awsevents.com/partners-sponsors/sponsor-list/ anyone on the upper levels of sponsorship probably has online groups around them trying to figure out how to use the damn thing.

That was fun, thank you for searching with me!

            2. 1

going to phone a friend for that one. Let's see what comes up!

  7. 1

Reminds me of Jimmified - that website was built as a joke, but it went semi-viral so I wouldn't be surprised if this ends up working as a solid business.

    1. 2

oh wow this thing is hilarious!

  8. 1

Curious to see how this will work
Is it purely tech or will you set manual jobs behind?
Guess I will find out during the alpha :)

    Good luck!

    1. 1

haha. doing things that don't scale and then scaling.

Hi ploggingdev! I googled that for you!

      https://trends.builtwith.com/websitelist/Google-Adsense

You can pay builtwith to get more granular information on tech stack (identifying those that use blog cms'es) and then just grep for crypto/tech keywords that you are targeting.

personally im optimistic that this concept actually doesn't need AI. the main idea is when you search for stuff you get stuck in a rut of what you know. if you outsource it to 5 other people they're gonna search for the info in weird ways because of their prior knowledge or just because they happen to think of other angles to do it.

That was fun, thank you for searching with me!
