Let the Users bet on themselves

I've been toying around with this idea for quite some time: an app where the user bets a small amount of money on himself that he will stay off the phone and be productive for a certain amount of time.
If he fails, the money will be donated to a good cause he agreed upon, otherwise nothing happens.

Kind of like Forest, but with a reverse incentive.

Do you think you would try that or do you have any concerns about this idea?

Thanks!

You might want to checkout Go Fucking Do It by @levelsio, a service similar to the one you're proposing (which by the way doesn't mean you shouldn't do it)

Hi, thanks for your tip, didn't know about it!

Gamification is always exciting at the start. But, if it is not rewarding enough to the user they fall off.
How do you plan to keep your users engaged for the long term?

That's a good point, didn't think about that.
The easiest would be some virtual currency where the users can unlock things.
But I definitely have to brainstorm more into that direction, thanks for your input!

My first reaction: "Hmm I'm desperate enough to stop my procrastinating to actually try that"

Haha, so I take that as a validating answer! :)
Are you using any tools for getting focused?

I use a Time Timer clock to work 50-minute sessions, and during this time I put my phone in another room.

I read the book "Indistractable", and it mentioned “precommitment devices”. Your proposition is the same but in a shorter timeframe. I read the effectiveness of precommitment devices in this book, and that is why I was intrigued by your idea.

          Okay, interesting.
This is the first time I heard about the concept of "Precommitment", it's nice to finally know a name for this kind of techniques.

          Thank you!

You may want to check out https://www.stickk.com/. I use a lot, although I never actually stake money. Still highly effective.
