I interviewed 200+ developers for my startups and I know - hiring tech talents is HARD.
Here are four startup hiring insights & tips :
1/ The most motivated people who have experienced some kind of trauma
I mean guys who have excellent student syndrome or have successful parents are most ultra-driven people.
How to detect: ask how a guy studied at school or college, was it easy?
2/ Intrinsic motivation is a must for a startup developer
Tip: Use The Gallap test.
It is a useful online personality-assessment tool that focuses on 34 themes that make up the user’s personality & motivation.
3/ If you don’t know how to hire, get a consultant
It's cliché as hell but a mistake in hiring can lead to long-term losses.
Any consultant will cost you less than the wrong hiring.
4/ Use psycholinguistics tips
Pay attention, “I” or “we” says the candidate when describing their experience.
“I” when talking about a team project -> what he/she was responsible for + how he/she can use unique skills to work successfully within a team.
A lot of “We” could be a warning sign -> can’t take responsibility.
That's a wrap!

Startups deserve the top tech talents, right?
How do you know you're good at hiring?
How do you know the devs you interviewed and rejected weren't better?
You cant.
You interviewed 200 devs. Hired some. And now you have 1 outcome.
You have no idea if you did good or not, you have nothing to compare it against.
I believe there is a good & bad job fit for a candidate. Not everyone is suited to work for a startup, and it's ok. This does not make the developer bad in terms of his hard skills. That's why soft skills matter.
