Hustle hard, parent harder: Indie Hackers are proudly raising kids

Why “3x mom” and “2x dad” are the new flex on LinkedIn and X

  • Indie Hackers and now, they’re embracing parenthood too.

  • David Heinemeier Hansson and Daniel Vassallo even updated their bios to flex parental pride.

  • It’s a whole vibe shift: family wins are getting as much love as business milestones.

The new wave of Indie Hackers isn’t just about startups and side hustles. It’s about life. More and more switch from the 24/7 grind to a more sustainable work-life balance. Heck, even more than half of Indie Hackers are in long-term relationships.

Now the time comes for parenthood. And nothing says it more plainly than the bios cropping up on X and LinkedIn: “Father of three,” or “3x mom.”

David Heinemeier Hansson, creator of Ruby on Rails and co-owner of 37signals, used to think it was silly, but acknowledged it's the most rewarding title there can be.

It hit a nerve. Daniel Vassallo, a fellow indie hacker, followed suit. He added his own parental pride to his bio and lit a spark. Across timelines and feeds, others followed. Indie Hackers aren’t just founders — they’re fathers, mothers, and everything in between.

Why now?

The world kept telling us that you're only as valuable as your business achievements. But many don't buy it anymore. For them, raising kids and building businesses are the same — messy, hard, and rewarding. Why hide it?

It’s more than words on a screen. It’s a small rebellion against the cold grind of work culture. Bios on LinkedIn now show “2X girl dad.” Some critics roll their eyes. Say it's cringe. But the ones living it, don't care. It’s real.

Indie Hackers have always done things their way. They’ve built in public, chased freedom, and carved paths where none existed. Now they’re doing the same with family. They’re saying: raising a child is as worthy of mention as raising a round.

This trend seems to just start getting traction. Maybe it’s a reminder to all of us — success isn’t just about what you build, but who you build it for. It’s not just a bio. It’s a philosophy.

A true learning, balancing everything in life with bright work for securing future goals and family responsibilities. Today the time has changed due to inflation and even to sustain now one has to work for it. That's the practicality of life.

Such a refreshing perspective! Balancing work-life and parenthood truly resonates, especially in today's hustle culture. It's inspiring to see Indie Hackers prioritizing family alongside business goals. By the way, speaking of balance, I recently came across this resource on KFC menu prices in South Africa super handy for family outings without breaking the budget. Keep sharing these uplifting stories.
