Local first, global next: growing beyond a niche audience

Hey Indie Hackers,

I’m Julien, founder of Linkeme.ai — an AI-powered tool that automates social media content from idea to image to publish.

We didn’t start with a grand launch.

No viral tweet.

No global waitlist.

Just a simple internal tool we used for our own consulting firm here in Luxembourg.

Phase 1: Local First

We got our first 10–15 users through word-of-mouth, local events, and client referrals. That helped us:

  • Validate the pain (everyone hates posting manually)

  • Iterate fast (tight feedback loops)

  • Build trust (we literally knew our users)

But at some point… we plateaued.

Phase 2: Realizing the Local Ceiling

Despite the good retention and feedback, growth was slow. We had:

  • No inbound traffic

  • Weak SEO

  • No visibility outside our network

I realized:

Product-market fit in a small market ≠ scalable growth.

Phase 3: Going Global (without burning out)

We’re now actively working to scale beyond the bubble:

  • Publishing on IH, Dev.to, Hashnode (sharing real progress)

  • Building backlinks through content partnerships

  • Preparing a proper Product Hunt launch (not just “drop and pray”)

  • Testing small Reddit + Twitter + YouTube channels

  • Offering real value: prompt templates, visual recipes, growth breakdowns

And we’re learning a lot.

What I’d tell past-me

Start small, but think distribution early.

A tight, local base is great for feedback — but don’t wait too long to build your global engine.

Talk to strangers. Write in public. Be discoverable.

If you’re stuck in the same “local-first trap,” happy to swap ideas or answer questions.

Also: if you’ve been through this transition — from niche to scale — I’d love to learn from your journey.

Julien
