Looking for a creative coder to help shape a new expressive medium

I’m building a new web-based communication medium where ideas and emotions unfold through timeline-based messages instead of static posts.

The format combines images, voice, atmosphere, movement, and visual effects, so a message can develop gradually over time instead of being compressed into one quick statement.

I already have an early working prototype. It uses JavaScript, CSS, browser-based animation, and a structured timeline system for creating and playing these messages.

I’m looking for a creative coder or front-end developer who enjoys visual, interactive experiments and might want to explore this direction with me.

To keep it simple and grounded, I’d like to begin with a paid 4-meeting trial collaboration.

The goal of the trial would be to review the prototype, discuss the creative and technical direction, identify what would make the editor more intuitive, explore the expressive effects system, and see whether the working rhythm feels right.

This is not a full-time job offer at this stage. It is a paid exploration phase. We can agree on a simple fixed amount for four focused meetings, with no expectation of unpaid work between them unless we both decide otherwise.

You do not need to have a traditional professional background. What matters more is that you have built things, enjoy visual/interactive experiments, and are comfortable enough with JavaScript, CSS, or browser-based creative work to explore the prototype seriously.

If this resonates with you, I’d be happy to share the prototype and talk.

Interesting project. I'm a builder too. Three live products, all bootstrapped. Curious how you think about finding your first users.

    1. 1

      That’s a good question.

Honestly, I don’t have a clear first-user strategy yet. Right now I’m still trying to understand and shape the medium itself before deciding the best entry point.

The reason I’m exploring this direction is that AI is creating an enormous abundance of images, voice, text, and visual material. But abundance alone does not create meaning. People still need a way to shape all of that into something intentional.

My current belief is that a timeline-based format may be a strong fit for that. Instead of using AI outputs as isolated images or posts, people could arrange them into a sequence where meaning develops over time — visually, emotionally, and conceptually.

So I’m still early on the user question. The first users may be creators, educators, storytellers, activists, or people trying to explain complex ideas in a more engaging way. But I want to be careful and test that instead of pretending I already know.

Hi Ezra. I am seeking a really interesting project that can dedicate my full time.
Let's connect and discuss about things. Thanks.

Really interesting direction this idea of messages unfolding over time instead of being static feels like a natural evolution of how we communicate online.

I’ve been exploring similar thoughts around interaction and user experience - especially how motion, timing, and subtle visual feedback can change the emotional impact of a product. What you’re describing sounds like it sits somewhere between storytelling, UI design, and creative coding, which is a space I’m very interested in.

I’m a front-end focused developer and founder of a small development team (Code4Mates), and I’ve worked with JavaScript, CSS animations, and building structured UI systems. I also enjoy experimenting with interactive concepts rather than just building standard interfaces.

The timeline-based approach and “expressive layer” you mentioned caught my attention - especially the challenge of making an editor that feels intuitive while still allowing creative freedom. That’s usually where most tools either become too complex or too limiting.

I’d definitely be interested in taking a look at the prototype and understanding how you’ve structured the timeline and effects system so far. The 4-meeting trial sounds like a great way to explore fit on both sides.

Happy to connect and dive deeper if you think this could be a good match 👍

Hi, thanks for the thoughtful reply.

I think you understood the direction very well — especially the part about motion, timing, subtle visual feedback, and the challenge of making the editor intuitive without making it too limited.

That is exactly one of the main problems I want to work on next. The prototype already has a timeline structure and an effects system, but the user experience still needs to become much clearer for a first-time user.

Before sharing the prototype, I’d like to clarify one thing: are you interested in exploring this personally as a possible collaborator, or mainly through your development team?

At this stage, I’m mostly looking for a direct collaborator to think with me, not only a development service.

      1. 1

That makes sense, and honestly the reason I replied was more from personal interest in the direction itself than from a “development service” perspective.

Code4Mates is something I’m building long-term, but for this specifically, I’m interested as an individual collaborator who enjoys exploring interaction systems, creative tooling, and experimental UX ideas. The concept itself is what caught my attention.

What you’re describing feels less like a standard product build and more like designing a new expressive language/interface, which is a very different kind of challenge from typical client development work. That’s the part I find interesting.

I’d be happy to approach the 4-meeting trial as a direct collaborator - reviewing the prototype, thinking through the editor experience, interaction flow, timeline logic, and how the expressive layer can feel intuitive for first-time users without losing flexibility.

If things evolve further later on, I do have a team I trust for implementation support when needed, but I think the early-stage thinking should stay very collaborative and focused.

Would love to see the prototype and learn more about how you currently structure the timeline/effects model.

The timeline-based format is a genuinely interesting problem space — most communication tools compress meaning into a single moment, but meaning often develops. The technical challenge isn't just animation, it's deciding what the timeline "knows" at each point and what it reveals.

I build interactive systems in JavaScript and have been experimenting with sequenced, state-aware UI patterns. Happy to take a look at the prototype if you're still exploring collaborators.

    1. 1

Hi, thanks — I think you understood one of the deepest parts of the project.

Yes, the timeline is not only about animation. It is about what the message reveals step by step, what the viewer understands at each moment, and how meaning changes as the sequence unfolds.

That is very close to what I’m trying to explore.

Since you mentioned JavaScript and sequenced, state-aware UI patterns, your background sounds relevant. I’d be happy to share the prototype and hear your first reaction.

I prefer not to post the prototype link publicly yet because it is still an early version. What would be the best way to connect — LinkedIn, email, or another profile?

  5. 1

I’m a full-stack developer with a strong focus on interactive web experiences using JavaScript, React/Next.js, animations, and creative front-end systems. What caught my attention is the idea of communication unfolding over time instead of being reduced to static posts , that’s a very interesting direction both technically and creatively.

I’ve worked on projects where UX, motion, real-time interaction, and structured systems mattered just as much as the underlying engineering, so the timeline-based approach and expressive effects system immediately make sense to me. I also enjoy experimenting with browser capabilities beyond standard interfaces, especially when it involves building something emotionally immersive and visually dynamic.

The paid 4-meeting exploration phase sounds fair and honestly a smart way to test creative and technical compatibility before committing deeper. I’d be interested in reviewing the prototype, understanding the architecture behind the timeline system, and exploring how the editor and effects workflow could become more intuitive and expressive.

I may come more from a product-building/full-stack background than a traditional creative coding scene, but I’m very comfortable working with browser-based interaction, animation logic, UI systems, and turning abstract ideas into usable experiences.

Would love to see the prototype and continue the conversation. drop a mail to xodemy@gmail

This is a really interesting direction, especially the focus on how ideas unfold over time, not just static posts. Also like the structured trial approach, feels like a good way to test both the work and the working rhythm early on. I’ve seen a lot of collaborations fail because that part gets skipped.

Curious how you’re thinking about evaluating that “fit” during those 4 meetings?

  7. 1

The idea of getting thoughts "compressed into one quick statement" really hits home. That's the main problem with most async communication, by the time you finish typing, you've already lost half the nuance you wanted to get across.

I've been thinking about this in the context of tool design, the input method shapes what gets captured. If typing is the only option, you only capture what you have time to type. Voice doesn't fix everything, but it does change what's possible. You can get more down in the moment without the keyboard getting in the way.

I'm curious how you're thinking about the input side of the editor, since that's where the richness either gets kept or lost.

    1. 1

Hi Ryan, thanks — I think you touched one of the most important questions in the project: the input method shapes what kind of meaning can actually be captured.

I’d like to continue this more directly, but I’m not sure Indie Hackers supports private messages here.

Do you have a preferred way to connect — LinkedIn, email, or another profile?

  8. 1

    Hi Ezra,

Your project sounds really interesting! I love the idea of combining images, voice, and atmosphere to create dynamic messages that evolve over time. I'm a front-end developer with experience in JavaScript, CSS, and interactive web projects, and I'm excited about the possibility of collaborating on this.

The creative direction and the timeline-based messaging system definitely resonate with me. I'd love to explore how I can contribute, especially with improving the editor's intuitiveness and enhancing the visual effects system.

I'm available to discuss further and would be happy to review the prototype. Let me know when would be a good time for our first meeting.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

    Thanks,
    Noah Zeph

    1. 1

Hi Noah, thanks again for reaching out.

I found your LinkedIn profile, but LinkedIn does not let me message you directly from my side.

If you’re comfortable, could you send me a LinkedIn connection request or message first? Then we can continue there.

Before scheduling a call, I’d also love to see any visual, animation, editor, creative coding, or interactive front-end projects you’ve worked on. A link or short description would be enough.

      1. 1

        I've sent the connection request.

  9. 1

This feels like it sits between storytelling tools and social media, would be interesting to see where it lands.

  10. 1

Hi Ezra, this resonates a lot I'm a JS/CSS dev who loves creative coding and interactive experiments. Would love to see the prototype and explore the trial collaboration.

  11. 1

Your idea is fascinating @molkho502 , let's discuss this in detail, drop a mail at [email protected].

    1. 1

Hi Harsh, thanks for reaching out.

Before moving to email, I’d like to check whether this project fits the kind of collaboration you’re interested in.

This is still an early exploratory project. I’m not only looking for normal development execution, but someone who may be interested in helping shape a new expressive medium: timeline-based messages, visual atmosphere, motion, voice, and meaning unfolding over time.

Would this kind of exploratory creative collaboration interest you, or are you mainly focused on more defined client/product development work?

  12. 1

I would be glad to explore the opportunity to work with you. We can connect via email at [email protected]
Additionally, could you please share your LinkedIn profile?
I look forward to discussing this further.
