Looking for beta testers to try my video editing app

Looking for beta testers to try my video editing app

Hey Indie Hackers. I'm the founder and creator of a video editing app. It's far from perfect but I am working on creating a launch list of critical items.

If anyone here wants to help a hungry hacker get some insights I would love to treat you by reciprocating in any way I can.

Definitely seems like a useful web-based tool. Canva-alternative for video. There isn't a dominant one in the market and I'm sure influencers would love to have a tool that such as this.

    1. 1

Yeah exactly. I think agencies or smaller brands/influencers can benefit. I want to turn this more into a marketing tool.

  2. 3

Could you describe some tech stacks, libraries that you used for the video editing part?

    1. 1

Sure if you want to hop on a call and discuss I would be happy to. Also if this project excites you then make sure to give this post a like so more people can see it.

It's mostly React.js on the front end. I'd be happy to go into more detail if you have specific questions.

The video editing is built using two components. One is a timeline, the other being an editor. Then there is a store that tracks the current time and syncronizes the two.

      1. 2

I'm curious as well. Especially the rendering. Are you using something like ffmpeg on the backend?

        1. 1

Yup exactly. I found it to be the best tool. I started using canvas and made the video by drawing each frame but that became too complex. So the idea is to map user input using the interface to generate the appropriate command.

How are you different from Kapwing? Looks cool.

    1. 1

Not really sure what they focus on. I have heard of them but don't know enough.

  4. 2

Going to give this a go. Need a dead simple video editor.

    1. 1

Cool. Let me know if you would like to hop on a call and we can discuss your needs.

    • I like the homepage design. Looks great, makes me feel like the editor itself might actually be easy to use.
    • Clicked a template and it loaded up the editor but the template image isn't displayed on the canvas. The left column where I'd expect more templates to be is empty.
    • Clicked images and selected one and it added it to the canvas but felt weird that the canvas was a square shape and there was white space around the image. I expected things to work similarly to how they do in the IG app where the image always fills the full frame by default.
    • I have no idea whether there's a market for a web-based story creator vs using the native app. Are there marketers that want to create stories on their desktop and share to multiple platforms? Maybe. Can you somehow make it even easier than the native app? Like they just add some copy, pick a few images, and you generate the full video for them? Just some things to consider.

Awesome feedback. I'm still working on templates. It's almost there I have it built but need to make a few. So next iteration I'll be sure to have that in order.

I'm starting to realize there is more of a market targeting agencies. So my goal is to turn this more into a marketing tool. Giving agencies the ability to create marketing videos without any skill.

The thing that separates this from the IG story is the animated elements that are editable. Still working on adding more, have some basic ones finished. Then when templates are in order that's also another one.

A big limitation to the IG editor is the timeline aspect. So IMO that is a huge feature.

What's next is that I need to talk to more agencies. My theory is that managing the content and putting it on a schedule is what I will be focused on next.

So to recap I would say the key benefits are.

      • Templates
      • Editable animated assets
      • Timeline
      • One-click subtitles
      • Eventually, more marketing-focused tools, content management, and analytics.

Bonus: If the market shows demand them perhaps collaboration features.

So it kind of sounds like you are canva.com but for short videos. Might be worth thinking about making it even simpler and faster to use. An editor is cool in theory but do people really need fine control like that? What if they just pick and template, pick a few elements they want in it (image 1, image 2, etc.. a song, transition style) and then they get their video. No being able to drag or resize images or mess with a timeline, you just automatically combine the elements in a way that looks pretty good. Just a thought!

Haha, I actually met the founder of a tool called automagical which did a similar thing. I like this idea but my intuition says its a good thing to leave a little bit of customization to the user. I am trying to find a balance between something sophisticated like AE but simple like Canva and other tools.

I think when templates are in full effect I'll focus on adding a UX that makes it easy to swap content. Then that should be easy enough for the lazier/busier people to create while leaving enough fine-tuning for people that want a specific result.

          1. 1

I actually fixed the template feature so you can demo it. Just look on the sidebar for templates and click https://storycreatorapp.com/creator

yo dude you gotta toss a link into this post if your going to ask for beta testers...

    1. 1

You're right just added. I wanted to keep it private and have interested candidates DM me for it. However, I'll just post it anyways.

If anyone is serious though I would like to set up a quick call or establish a channel of communication so I can take proper notes.

      Cheers

        1. when you press blog, and then the logo in upper left you should go back to the home page of website, but it does nothing.
-I don't think blogs are a meaningful addition to websites nowadays, i would focus just on the product.
-Dude log on with google only? wtf. Right there you lost me

        2. on main page when you scroll down to edit templates, you should be able to play around with those without logging in. Your trying to quickly convince the user its worth signing up and editing their videos, you have to show them quickly the value, not force them to log on before they can visualize it.
-if you cant show them, get rid of that section and make a video that flies through how an edit would work quickly with a cool song (not you talking).

        3. I think the whole banner on the bottom with useless information is a passing fad. like - like i'm not going to click these, the product should be intuitive enough to figure it out or should have a simple (?) icon somewhere with this documentation.
          HOW TO
          Add text to video
          Edit videos online for free
          Add audio on video
          WHAT WE ARE
          A free video editor
          Free video editor app
          Online free video editor

I am more worried about your business model, everyone and their dogs sister is doing this, you have so many competitors, such a crowded market. Most people edit videos so that they can share them - and they share them using stuff like snapchat or Instagram who either have those features, or very soon will have those features (like if they see people liking and using your product).
so your targeting the people who don't use those products, or want to edit videos to share through another medium.

I mean its possible - but then the question is how much should I pay for this - how much value do these additional features add for me?

what I would do is keep it free, get as many users as possible and try to get bought out by some sharing platform.

        1. 1

Awesome thanks for the feedback. I appreciate it.
