Looking for feedback on our fitness app!

Hi!

We are building a fitness app that:

  • gives you access to a library of hundreds of different exercises for each muscle group
  • teaches you each exercise with videos
  • allows you to build your own workouts quickly and interactively
  • supports you while building your workouts, e. g. by suggesting exercises that fit well into your workout and smart training patterns (such as pyramid, linear increase, linear decrease, etc.)
  • allows you to share your own workouts with the community and also explore workouts from the community
  • allows you to challenge your friends and other community members to a duel

Here is the landing page:

https://wod.builders/

We would love to hear your feedback
a) on the landing page
b) on the product

Product is still in development and will be hopefully launched in October.

How is it better? I didn't understand how it is better than other fitness products.

Hi @satvikpendem, thanks for your feedback!
Maybe I need to make that more visible on the landing page.
Basically we have the following distinguishing features:

      1. A better workout building experience: Current apps are not really great to build interactively workouts. We make this experience a lot better by supporting gestures etc., which makes it ultimately better, faster and more fun to use.
      2. Custom videos for each exercise: For each exercise we have recorded a video with our fitness model to teach this exercise.
      3. We support exercises with AND without equipment.
      4. The user is intelligently supported with building his workout, such as warning when certain muscle groups are overtrained or suggesting well paired exercises.
      5. Social / Game aspect: Users can challenge other members or their friends to a duel. We have scores and ranking lists.

Hey, just thought I'd weigh in on those points above from my point of view.

1 - Definitely agree that a lot of established players can be out UX'd by great product teams. MyFitnessPal for instance has a number of UX issues that wind me up and they've been going for 15 years!

2 - A lot of fitness apps I've seen have custom exercise videos so not sure that's a USP

3 - I've seen a few aps which cover both equipment with and without but its not such an established feature that it won't set you aside.

4 - I like the sounds of this feature you could really go to town with some AI elements here, integrate fitness watches etc. although that's not MVP.

5 - I like the social aspect, I was considering building something with this element during lockdown because I thought it would really bring people together and utilise all that time in a positive way. As far as I'm aware not a lot of fitness apps outside of Strava really focus on social and gamification.

Hi @mvp_the_world - thanks for your inspirations and thoughts. Let me shortly come back to your points:

          1. MyFitnessPal is a great example in that case. We have also tried workout building apps - the UX is horrible TBH. I think there is indeed potential to make it a lot of more fluid.
          2. Indeed many apps have that, but I think not so many "workout building apps" have good videos. Apps with pre-built workouts such as Freeletics have great videos, but the "build your own workouts apps" don't have great videos as far as I have seen. But yeah - all in all it's more like a nice addon.
          3. Yeah the thought behind that is to really make the app flexible for anyone. There are different communities - some prefer bodyweight only, some prefer to use dumbbells, some use sports cross trainer, TRX, crossfit equipments, etc.
But I guess this is in the category "must have feature" to work
          4. Similar to you, we see a lot of potential here. We need to scope it down to MVP but in the feature if the app finds traction, we want to expand this whole AI feature here.
          5. Lockdown was actually the inspiration for this social aspect haha. Indeed, there is potential here we think. Maybe we even need to lay down more focus on this aspect.

Thanks again for your thoughts. Made it clear, we need to focus on the key differentiators - in our case a great user experience, AI and social & gamification aspects

    Hi,

I don't like crossfit. With your usage of WOD I get the feeling this is for crossfitters and therefore I probably wouldn't be interested. Maybe you could make it more clear who the target market is.

The Imprint menu link at the top is barely readable.

Access to 100 exercises for free. Access to all exercises for the paid plan. How many exercises, 101? It would be good if there was a better idea of how many.

I'm not a fan of the illustrations.

You could really remove the top menu and put the Imprint and privacy at the bottom of the page.

Good luck with your project, I hope you do well.

    Tim

The one change I'd suggest rolling out is the images on the landing page. The undraw images are great for tech products, but they feel a bit too corporate. I'd opt for images or even video of people working out. Show your audience how their life will look with your app (something you can't do with undraw images). Freeletics, Fiit and Thenx do a good job of this.

I might be missing something but I'm not sure on who the target market is.... A non-fitness savvy person is likely going to want a pre-made workout, as they won't really know what will get them to their goals. A person savvy enough to construct their own workouts likely isn't going to need video guides to help them. I have no doubt that there will be a market for this product, but I think you may need to niche it down a bit more.
I can see this appealing to those in the crossfit community (or other niche groups like OCR), which ties nicely to your use of the word 'wod'. Is it worth leveraging that community or another to give a focus?

Either way, awesome effort, and great to see someone building new products in the fitness space (one I personally love).

Hi @alex365 - thanks for your feedback!

Your image & emotional aspect is a very good point, I will aim to change that!

      Regarding the "target market aspect":
Certainly good aspects on that. We definitely don't aim at total fitness beginners. Neither it's an app for total pros. It's more something in the middle. The video exercises are good for people already are into fitness but are tired of using the same exercises again and again - to learn new exercises. The communities you mentioned are indeed a good point and I could believe that the target audience exists around them (nice that you got to know the word WOD :) ). I myself, liked to train by myself - not in a gym, not with prebuilt workouts. So I created my own workout. But I sticked always to the same exercises.
All in all, you are probably right that we need to niche it down more and make it explicit on the landing page.

Thanks for your throughts and the compliment :)

No problem at all Sharikou, as a fitness lover it's great to see people in the Indie Hacker community trying to shake things up :)!

Drop me a message once you've made some updates, would love to check in and see how it ends up :).

Took a look and these are some of my thoughts/ideas:

    • Try to highlight whats unique in your fitness app. I already used some in the past and I didn't really see why I should use yours rather than any of the big ones already out there
    • A short video where I could see the basic feature would be great I think to understand how it works
    • Instead of the illustrations I would show more of the app, to see how the features look in the app
    • You could highlight how many more exercises there are in the Premium version, currently you only know there are "more"
    • Is the challening a friend really a premium-only feature? I would image that could help a lot with the growth if you make it available for free
    • Also in the pricing I think it would be great to actually see the premium features like screenshots or a video

Hope this helps you out 🙂 Good luck with the launch!

Hi @Zwenza, thanks for your feedback and the wishes :)
Everything sounds very reasonable. We'll take your feedback and try to improve the page! Regarding the challenge feature: Yes, this might be really a nice helper to grow the app. We'll think about that!

May I ask you one question back:

      1. You said that you don't see the USP yet in our application. May I ask what other apps you are using, that you think compete with our app?
      1. 1

Sure, the first app I was thinking of was Freeletics which I used in the past. Is there something you do very different to them?

        1. 1

          Thanks for your reply :)
We have been Freeletics users ourselves for a long time.
The difference is that we don't offer courses. We target users who want to build their own workouts, rather the users who prefer to use pre-made courses. Maybe I need to make that more visible on the landing page

Hi, the page is in English but there is a "tracker" and maybe a cookie consent in German. I would not put Imprint and and Data privacy to the top as they don't seem to very important.. I would put them to somewhere to the bottom. I would put the pricing to a separate page and rework it a bit .. the look & feel is not great but I can not say what exactly I dislike.. maybe color is too sharp

    1. 1

Hi @tomas_dosoudil and thanks for your feedback!
Yes the tracker is annoying me right now since I can't seem to make English by default, it should actually change based on the browser language...Need to have a look at that.

May I ask why you would put the pricing on a different page and what means "too sharp" for you? :)

Hi @trogdor and thanks for your feedback.
Indeed this is a point where we are working on right now - even though your thought extends this even a little bit with the "threshold idea".
Right now, there are two opportunities:

      1. Choose a specific training set (pyramid patterns, linear patterns, etc.) and the repetitions are pre-populated base on the base-value and increase/decrease factor. So you can build out really quickly workouts
      2. Customize by yourself: You can customize the reps / durations all by yourself.

May I ask you: How exactly would you imagine this "success threshold" feature in a flow?
