Hello IH,
I'm a developer/entrepreneur who is looking to start a new project that is geared towards tackling a huge problem, the news. I think everyone knows that the news today is pretty broken and some 83% of Americans are totally dissatisfied with it.
I believe the source of that dissatisfaction is largely due to trust or a lack-thereof and that's because for most major news outlets, you don't even have to listen to them to know what they're going to peddle.
For the past year, I've been working on a news aggregator that uses machine learning to essentially sort through the news. Its aim is to create unbiased news articles that are also easily digestible. There's more to it than that, but this is the gist.
There's still a lot of work to be done, but I recently hit a big milestone that I didn't think I would reach this soon. So I'm starting to take this idea/project more seriously, which is why I'm reaching out to friends/family/peers to see if there is any interest. Right now, it's myself and one other who brings 10+ years experience in news media.
I'm looking for people who are not only interested in this idea, but could see themselves becoming passionate about this project. If that's you and you feel like you could bring something big to this project, I'd love to hear from you.
Also, only fluent English speakers at this time.
Thanks and looking forward to hearing from you.
Do you think people are interested in reading unbiased news? From what I understand about myself, I certainly tend to gravitate to news that confirms my bias.
Naturally, and we have thoughts on how to handle this. But for the most part, we'll be going after users who want unbiased news and those who are tired of traditional media outlets.
That is, after all, the human condition.
Hey Alex, great stuff trying to tackle this. The news is a major concern for many reasons. I believe "bias" is still not the foundational reason the news is what it is. The news is feeding from the same database controlled mainly by the big players. Aggregating from the source will still result in the same biassed news.
First, bias is almost impossible to be removed from the news. For a news to be unbiased, the reporter has to present the news as such. If news is presented in a bias or opinionated manner, then irrespective of aggregation, it will always be bias.
So I'm glad you do have partners who have extensive years of experience in the news. I think the application of first principle here would be very essential if the main goal is removing that bias. If it is, then you have to go deep down to the source of the bias and not just the channel (news media) of the bias. That might be extremely challenging, so another part might be identifying independent news sources you believe match what an unbiased news is. This means having a standardized way of telling what makes up an unbiased news. This has to be both broad and specific with quantitative or categorical measurements it can bounce against to test its biasness.
This is the first problem to conquer or maybe there are even earlier ones. After this, next is getting the product to be used and accepted by people, especially building a community of believers who do not only speak of their desire but actively pursue their desire for the truth. This is more than a news restructuring as I see it. This is a movement.
To also add, people do not desire bias or fake news. Nobody does. People desire pleasure, respond more to fear and chaos. That doesn't necessarily make a news biassed, but it can tilt what the media chooses to focus on. I think distinctively breaking how the news media functions can better show where the bias rises from: in reporting, researching, or collecting data. There's more to this but hope this helps.
I see this as a really huge project and it will be nice to see how your product comes out and I wish you all the best. It's fascinating and you will need all the support you can get. Kudos to you and the team for going after this.
What are you looking for? Engineers with AI experience or other areas such mobile, web development, and services?
Hi Alex,
I'm very interested in your project and I believe I might have skills that can be useful since I have a Masters Degree in Intelligent Systems (AI) and my Thesis was in Natural Language Processing (for the Portuguese language, but almost everything is adaptable for any language). How can I reach you?
JD
Hey JD,
It would be great to connect and talk more.
Send me an email. There's a link to it on my bio page.
Thanks
I also think there are huge issues in the news industry, and the media has been changing. These problems are spread across other countries too, not just America.
I can see some potential in this area, but what kind of co-founders are you looking for?
Right now we have a strong technical partner and someone who has significant experience in news media, so ideally we would love to see interest in people who are adept in marketing/growth. However, we're open to everyone who is interested and believes that they can bring value.
Hi Alex,
The idea is interesting.
Hope your aware of Zhang yiming's Jinri Toutiao- a news and information content platform.
I can support you in business modeling, revenue modeling and strategising.
If this is what you are looking for, Let's discuss more about this via Email. Mine: [email protected].
For your information, I am a part of a startup working on deep learning(Image analytics) already.
Cheers,
Tony,
India
I had not heard of Toutiao, thanks for sharing that. It would be great to speak with you. I will reach out after the holidays.
Happy New year Alex. Sure!
Cheers
