Hey all! Happy New Year! I'm new here, so please bear with me. I've been working for startups the past 3-4 years, but have never really started anything on my own. Looking for some validation/tips on how to position this idea of mine after having conducted a lot of research on best software to utilize for different companies.
I'm a non-technical person, but I figured why not attempt to provide value to founders, startups, and small-business owners regarding best tools/practices/strategies to use. I would like to help cut down the time it takes to do research on the implementation of specific tools or topics. I will likely choose the topic based on search volume.
I'm thinking of the best way to be as objective as possible: # of customers/reviews on avg from software advice, capterra, etc., avg. rating, price point, # of integrations with other widely-used apps, additional feedback on Quora, Reddit, employee satisfaction. I'm sure there are other things I may consider such as funding amount or # employees if the figure is available publicly.
From Courtland's talk at HustleCon, he mentioned finding a way to monetize from the start. Considering all this, my questions are: 1) is this something you'd pay for if the research was thorough enough? Issues here: there are so many tools out there and different use cases. I do understand that vetting does take time and isn't just an overnight decision. 2) if I decided to not monetize from the start but do so down the road (when I had a good amount of traffic), should I consider the affiliate marketing route and/or incorporate selling ad space?
Any feedback is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance everyone.
It would help to have clear thoughts. It took me a long time to figure out what your "idea" was.
I think it's this line: "cut down the time it takes to do research on the implementation of specific tools or topics."
It's good you're starting at the problem.
I'm going to rephrase it: You want to review tools.
Seems you need more validation and this can only be done by talking to people. So go talk to people you want to help. Ask the questions from "The Mom Test".
In your case, I'd be more specific about company and person and tool set you'd like to help.
Specificity helps find the people faster.
and... Researching "Topics" is far different than "Tools"
The Hustle's trends.co is very wide.
2 Polymath's is a bit more narrow: https://2pml.com/
Capterra.com is far different than Ecommerceguide.com
Thank you! I will continue to talk to people and really dig into their painpoints. This definitely helps with finding more clarity on the direction I should go--reviewing tools.
"Review as services"?
After reading this, first things come to mind is an IH interview:

https://www.sitebuilderreport.com/best-website-builder
Basically he wrote a very detail review for each site builder like Squarespace/Wix/etc.
and make money by the reader using his affiliate link
very helpful! thank you!
