Today, I got this email from Shopify requiring me to rename my app--Shoppy: A Better Slack Bot--after 2 years on their app store, having over 1,000 installs, and sending over >1.2M Slack alerts. Not to mention, Shopify has made money off of all my paying users.
I politely asked for an exemption and was promptly denied.
I believe in genuinely believe in Shopify's mission to arm the rebels against the evil empire (cough Amazon), but forcing devs to change app names because "Shoppy" could be a misspelling of "Shopify" feels like some evil empire stuff.
Also, to notify app dev 2 weeks before Christmas to make these updates that will impact their domain names, front end pages, and could lead to confusion in their customers feels like more evil empire stuff.
Ultimately, I'll probably have to make the changes or else my app gets shut down but it feels like a huge defeat as I've been a fan of Shopify since I found out about them in 2016.
If you also feel like this is a crappy thing, would love a like or a RT so Tobi is aware that this isn't a dev-friendly thing: https://twitter.com/chptung/status/1337079916060233728
Fun fact, the Levenstein distance between Shopify and Shoppy is 2, the same as between Shopify and Spotify. Why don't they choose an equal opponent...
Usually Shopify is pretty accommodating and willing to work with devs, but this sucks.
Sorry you're dealing with that Chris.
Agreed! Up until now, I've always had a positive experience, but this feels like a distinct change. Thanks for the support!
That really sucks! Especially changing the domain name is a pain.
I also had an issue with my second Shopify app name. They said that I can't name my app XML Exporter because it's a generic feature name. I renamed the app to Exporteo which turned out to be good because I later added support for formats other than XML.
Hi buddy. I have been thinking for a long time about dating sites and whether it is worth using them. And just recently, I finally decided to register on this dating site https://www.100freedatingsites.net/best-dating-sites-for-introverts/ With its help, I was able to find myself a new girlfriend. With whom we started dating literally after a couple of dates, and now together and very happy. I didn’t regret using the dating site.
