Hey fellow Indie Hackers!
My name is Allister, and I'm very excited to be moving into the Indie Hacker space! I have a strong passion for low-code/no-code tooling, and have started working on a prototype for one of my ideas - Documeld.
Customised document generation is hard, especially when you're trying to build a low-code business. You either need to roll your own in-house solution (which is costly to maintain), hack together existing tools that involve working with tedious syntax (e.g., HTML to PDF), or pay a hefty price for enterprise software like FormStack.
Documeld aims to simplify this process by using a familiar, rich text editor interface to build your document templates. Adding custom merge variables is super easy - highlight the text you want to turn into a variable, and give it a unique key. No need to manually type brackets or braces.
Generating a PDF is just as simple - call an HTTP endpoint with your merge variables, and Documeld will seamlessly crunch your template and return a compiled PDF to you.
I have an early working prototype (check out the video below), with the following planned functionality for MVP:
I'm keen to hear from the community if this is something you've struggled with before, and whether you would use Documeld in your business?
Thanks!
Hey everyone!
Quick update - I coincidentally came across Export SDK after posting this, which was recently launched by @rionmartin and his team. It looks like a very polished solution to the problem I was trying to solve, and took a very similar approach to the one I had in mind. Instead of reinventing the wheel, I'd strongly suggest checking out Export SDK instead!
Good luck to @rionmartin and his team - there's definitely a market for this!
@allistercsmith Wow! Thanks for the shout-out and recommendation. The UI for your MVP looks great and I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with next.
