Mac OSX PHP Developer Setup

It took me a bit of trial and error, and googling, but I found no complete setup guide to setup your Mac to start developing PHP/MySQL apps. Maybe I was just rusty and out of touch but I wanted to compile a complete set of instructions and share as this would have saved me a ton of time:

I hope you find it useful and that this is the correct forum for it.

It’s a good guide, and well written.

I also develop PHP (laravel) apps on a Mac, and these days I have MAMP pro running, as it allows me to switch between Apache and Nginx easily. It also allows me to switch PHP versions. All you have to do is make sure your path environment variables are set right.

Maybe one day I’ll work docker into my dev workflow, but not yet.

For my coding tool I used sublime 3 but I’m often using VIm for server maintenance.

My only question is why use Apache and not Nginx? Nginx is much faster and can scale better. It’s a super useful skill to have.

    Anyway, well done, good work.

      Thanks for the compliment.

I tried MAMP, but I just wasn't feeling it for whatever reason. Maybe I will give it another look.

As far as Nginix is concerned, no real reason. Perhaps I've just always used Apache and got comfortable with it. I'll give Nginix a look.

I also installed Sublime, it's a great editor.

I would recommend using Laravel Valet for local dev environment.
It sets up domains automatically u dear the .test tld and makes it very easy to work with (even if you’re not using Laravel itself).

I like the first step - CLEAR EVERYTHING OUT -
Many times I have looked to do something and followed the steps to the letter only to fail for some obscure reason/error usually caused as I had something similar or prior version already installed that conflicted.

Thanks. I was stuck for a while in version confusion until I finally just deleted everything I could think of.
