Made $1,000 in a week by marketing to these channels

Hey,

I'm excited to share with you how I made $1000 in my first week after launching my startup Roastd.io. There's nothing quite like that feeling of seeing your hard work pay off, I didn't put much effort into this tbh but the sites I did use helped spread the word quite a bit. Here's what I did:

Product Hunt

This ones obvious so I'll keep it brief but don't get lazy when it comes to posting here, keep all the assets super high quality and don't buzzword people to sleep. I used a gif for my main image gif for my main image and it seemed to get lots more eyes on the page than others that hadn't.

Indie Hackers

Maybe another obvious one but not for the reasons you think. You can drop a product launch on here but mine still hasn't even been verified. I actually got a bunch of interest because I posted a story about how I built my startup in a single night I built my startup in a single night and it became profitable almost immediately, don't underestimate the power of telling your story!

Hacker News

Another classic but most of my traffic came from showing the product on here, it seemed to get mixed reviews but mostly positive and some paying customers.

Twitter DM's

I got the highest amount of conversions from this with the least amount of effort so I'd recommend it but it's not super sustainable and probably comes across as spam so don't want to keep doing it much going forward. I did however get to roast Janiz Ozolins website from this, he took the advice and is now kicking a**!

Slack Channels

This one I didn't even consider prior to launching but have been invited to two by other founders who have created their own micro networks and it's getting the word out quite nicely for Roastd, again without having to do too much.

Places that DIDN'T work so well for me (so far)

Startups.FYI - Paid a couple hundred dollars after already having earned more than that to only get a couple hundred visits and no customers.
Reddit - I really dislike posting here in general because if by the grace of God it gets past auto mods, real mods will just find a reason to take it down for one reason or another (any tips here are welcomed).
Facebook - I dunno maybe I should get my grandad to pay me so I can roast his portfolio.
CtrlAltCC - Paid 10x less than Startups.FYI and got 50% of visitors than I did there but no customers still.

So most of these channels were effective in their own way, I didn't have a predefined strategy or any plan whatsoever, I've tried building a startup for a few years before that failed so have learnt a few lessons from that but am sharing what I'm learning as I go along with Roastd.io

Keep experimenting and I guess the takeaway is don't be afraid to test stuff out and don't beat a dead horse.
Good luck 🔥

Wow, that's a great success story! It's amazing to see what you were able to accomplish in such a short amount of time. Your determination and willingness to experiment definitely paid off. Congrats on your success and thank you for sharing your story!

Thank you, still experimenting a bunch so hopefully it continues to work out well.

What were some of the key lessons you learned from your past failed startup that you applied to Roastd.io? How do you think the different channels you experimented with have contributed to your success?

          Lessons

          • Don't waste time beating a dead horse.
          • Don't break the bank before you've validated an idea somewhat.
          • Most things you're told to do working a 9-5 in tech will not help you survive when building a startup.

As for success I haven't reached anywhere near the goals I've set out but it's not bad for a start, the channels have been everything so far.
