Major Record Labels Want Stricter Rules for AI Music Charts.
This is absurd!
I stumbled upon some industry news like verge this morning and had to stop scrolling immediately because this one directly affects every single person making music on Ai music right now.
Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group and several other major music companies just proposed new guidelines that could completely reshape how AI generated music qualifies for official charts.
the proposal doesn't ban AI music outright. but it wants chart eligible songs to be substantially human created, use properly licensed AI tools, and clearly disclose AI involvement.
sounds reasonable on the surface right? until you think about what "substantially human created" actually means in practice. who decides that percentage. who enforces it. and what happens to hybrid creators making genuinely artistic music with Suno when some committee of label executives decides their track doesn't qualify.
lol okay sure. 😂
here's why the labels are doing this now.
AI made it possible to generate thousands of songs in minutes. AI spam flooding streaming platforms. training data lawsuits still unresolved. fully automated music potentially dominating charts with zero human creative decisions behind it. so the labels want a filter. and the filter is chart eligibility.
what's actually happening underneath all of this:
the labels can't stop AI music. that fight is over and they know it. Spotify and UMG literally just built their own licensed AI remix tool last month. so instead of banning it they're doing the next best thing — controlling who gets mainstream visibility and who doesn't.
if these guidelines get adopted worldwide AI music basically splits into two lanes.
lane one: commercially released songs where AI assists human creators under proper licensing and disclosure. chart consideration. industry support. algorithmic push.
lane two: the independent AI creator ecosystem. YouTube. TikTok. Suno creators. bedroom producers. no chart recognition. no mainstream visibility boost.
duh. guess which lane the major labels own. 🙄
the creators who survive this are the ones combining AI with real songwriting, real production decisions, real storytelling, and real audience building. not just hitting generate and uploading whatever comes out. AI becomes another instrument. not a replacement for the human behind the music.
the debate is no longer whether AI belongs in music. that's dead. the new debate is who gets to write the rules. and right now it's looking like the same people who've been controlling music for the last 50 years.
do you think chart eligibility rules for AI music are a reasonable standard or just the labels finding a new way to control who wins?
