As an entrepreneur, one of the best ways to build a successful product is to solve a problem you've experienced yourself. That's exactly what happened with Mokkup.ai, a dashboard wireframing tool that lets you create high-fidelity mockups in under 30 minutes.
Mokkup.ai was founded by myself and my partner while running our data consulting company NeenOpal. We continually faced challenges in the dashboard design process - miscommunication between clients, analysts, and designers wasting countless hours recreating and revising dashboard designs. There was no simple tool that non-designers could use to quickly wireframe dashboards.
Unable to find an existing solution for our pain points, we decided to build our own. Mokkup's key features directly addressed the workflow problems we faced:
In just over a year since launching in February 2023, Mokkup has already gained over 35,000 customers. Here are some valuable lessons I've learned along the way:
Achieving Product-Market Fit is Easier In Your Own Industry:
Because I intimately understood the problems Mokkup aimed to solve, achieving product-market fit was considerably easier. I could readily discuss pain points with others in my data/product circles who faced the same workflows. This open dialogue helped validate and refine Mokkup before we even built it.
Build Early Consumer Interest:
Many colleagues were eagerly following Mokkup's journey since I was solving a problem they experienced daily. Their initial feedback on design principles, professional needs, and more directly shaped Mokkup's core pillars. These supporters became our first paid users and still remain customers today.
Leverage Your Personal Network:
This is very common advice, but honestly, the most tried-and-trusted one there is. Since you've experienced the problem yourself, you likely already have a built-in network of people facing those same challenges. Don't be afraid to tap into those connections when building your solution. My pre-existing relationships allowed me to have candid discussions about workflow issues and get honest feedback in a low-pressure environment.
Those initial conversations provided an invaluable foundation that guided Mokkup's early development. I continually bounced ideas off trusted industry colleagues who understood the context behind the problems I was trying to solve. Their input was crucial for validating hypotheses and course-correcting when needed.
Positioning and Messaging are Crucial:
While Mokkup offered a great user experience, we initially received comments like "How is this different from Figma?" We quickly realized clear positioning statements were needed to differentiate our unique value proposition as the only design tool exclusively for dashboard wireframing. Simplifying our website, creating video demos/help guides, and consistently highlighting our niche made a huge difference.
Keep Users in the Loop:
From the very start, we've made user transparency a top priority. We continuously share our product roadmap and upcoming releases. Taking direct user feedback helps us prioritize requested features and templates. Regularly looping customers into our progress builds loyalty and trust.
Ultimately, solving my own problem and deeply understanding my target users put me in the best position to develop a winning product that meets a real market need. If you can create a solution for the issues you personally experience, it will be much easier to achieve product-market fit and effectively design, position, and evolve your business.
I’d also love to hear from you about your thoughts, suggestions, or feedback on Mokkup. Creating hi-fi dashboard wireframes on Mokkup.ai is completely free!
