MakeMyCards: A Journey from a Personal Gift to a Fun, Collaborative Tool to Make Presents

Hello IndieHackers community!

I'm excited to share a project that started from a simple, heartfelt gift and has grown into something I think many of you might enjoy and find useful. It's called MakeMyCards, a website designed to help you create custom card decks, making every occasion more fun and personalized.

The Genesis of MakeMyCards

It all began with a birthday present for my mom. My brother had suggested making a custom "Cards Against Humanity" deck as a present for my mom's birthday. Something personal and unique, fun that would bring us a few laughs. I took up the challenge, designing each card with inside jokes and memories. The outcome? A hit! It was honestly so much fun and joyful!

Seeing the impact, I soon created another deck for a friend’s birthday. Just like before, the process was a blast but also a bit painful. Adjusting layouts, ensuring the text fit, managing contributions from other friends—it was all manually done and quite time-consuming. That’s when the light bulb went off: Why not simplify this process? Why not make it accessible to anyone who wants to craft something similar without the hassle?

What is MakeMyCards?

That's when I thought about creating MakeMyCards, a web platform where users can create custom decks for card games. You start by naming your deck, and then you can immediately start adding black and white cards. But here’s the best part: you can share a link with your friends and they can add their ideas to the deck in real-time. Once everyone's happy, just finalize the deck, make a small payment, and download a high-quality PDF of your custom cards, ready to print.

The Experience

Building MakeMyCards was as much about creating a useful tool as it was about capturing the joy and creativity of making those first decks by hand. I wanted to keep the interface simple, fun, and playful. After all, the whole point is enjoyment and creativity.

And now, if you are a game lover, a gift giver, or just a creative spirit, I want to invite you to try out MakeMyCards. Whether it’s for a special occasion, a gift, or just a fun evening, I hope this tool can bring a little extra joy into your life.

Looking for Feedback

As a new project, feedback is gold. I’m looking for users who can test MakeMyCards in different scenarios and with various groups. Tell me what works, what doesn’t, and what features you think could enhance the whole experience. Your feedback will be invaluable in shaping the future of MakeMyCards and ensuring it truly meets the needs of its users.

Try it out at MakeMyCards and let me know what you think! You can leave feedback through email or drop a comment here. Can’t wait to hear about the fun decks you’ll create!

Thanks for reading, and I look forward to making MakeMyCards even better with your help.

Cheers,

This is a really great idea! I like how you can make personalized card decks and share the process with friends. The story behind it is very nice too, and I can see you worked hard to make it special.

Something that could make it even better is if we could get the cards already printed and cut, and delivered to my place. The PDF is good, but it would be nice to not worry about printing and cutting. Just getting the cards ready to use would be awesome!

I think this is a wonderful project, and I’m excited to see how it grows. Keep up the good work!
