Managing hourly projects becomes messy once you use multiple disconnected tools

Hey Indie Hackers 👋

I’m building Taskiter to solve a problem we kept running into while working on hourly-billed projects: managing tasks, time tracking, and project billing becomes unnecessarily complex when each part lives in a separate tool.

The problem

Most hourly teams don’t use one system, they use a stack:

  • tasks in a project management tool

  • time tracking in a separate app

  • billing data prepared manually in spreadsheets

Each tool works fine on its own, but together they create friction.
You can track time, but:

  • it’s not always clear which hours belong to which tasks

  • billing rules live outside the system

  • project-level summaries require manual work

  • reporting becomes repetitive and error-prone

The workflow works but it’s slow, fragmented, and hard to maintain as projects grow.

Where things get inefficient

From our experience, teams billing by the hour often deal with:

  • Manual coordination
Exporting time entries, adjusting them, and preparing billing data by hand.

  • Unclear project visibility
Hours are tracked, but understanding the full picture of a project requires jumping between tools.

  • Too many sources of truth
Tasks say one thing, time trackers another, spreadsheets something else.

Most project management tools focus on organizing work.
Most time tracking tools focus on logging hours.
Very few tools focus on how those hours relate to project structure and billing workflows.

Why we built Taskiter

We built Taskiter to bring these pieces together into one consistent workflow.
The idea is simple:

  • tasks define the scope of work

  • time is tracked directly against tasks

  • billing data is derived from the same source

Instead of stitching data together manually, everything stays connected by default.

What Taskiter focuses on

Taskiter is built specifically for projects billed by the hour, not as a generic task manager.
It combines:

  • project and task management

  • task-level time tracking

  • billing-ready project summaries

The goal is not automation for its own sake, but clarity and efficiency in day-to-day project work.

Why we’re sharing it here

Taskiter started as an internal tool.
We’re now sharing it publicly to see if other teams face similar challenges.

We’re not trying to replace every tool in a team’s stack, just reduce the friction between tasks, time tracking, and billing.

I’d love feedback from:

  • agencies

  • software teams

  • freelancers working on hourly projects

How do you currently connect tasks, tracked time, and billing in your workflow?
Where does it start to feel inefficient?
