Marketing channels for a newsletter read by indie makers and solopreneurs

I recently moved my newsletter to a new domain, server, and design. Now it's time to focus on marketing.

After some research, the following channels seem to be most promising for someone with a small budget like me:

• Content distribution - post issues on Reddit, Medium, etc.
• Cross promotions -reach out to newsletters writers and give each other a shoutout
• Newsletter ads - find newsletters that sell sponsorships at reasonable prices
• Podcast ads -find podcasts that sell sponsorships at reasonable prices
• Reddit ads - heard very different stories here. Some people get great results, others no results at all. But I'm willing to spend a few dollars to find out.
• SEO - the move from a .so to a .com domain already resulted in a noticeable boost. But other than that, I haven't done anything to optimize my site for search engines.

Are there any other promising channels I should consider? What are some specific newsletter and podcast sponsorship opportunities I should look into?

    Hi Jakob,

About a third of my newsletter subscribers came from the 4 original articles I wrote. Original content trumps curation for audience building. It's hard to build a big audience on curation alone.

Another big one is getting mentioned in other newsletters. I always link to where I discovered a piece of content, not just the original creator. I think that builds goodwill and encourages other curators to reciprocate. I would say about 20% of my subscribers came from unsolicited mentions in other newsletters.

      Hi John, (@IdeaEconomy)
I've seen your newsletter crop up a few times via Josh Spector's, so it's good to hear the insights of a successful newsletter creator.

@jakobgreenfeld I've only just started getting into podcasts these last few weeks, so never thought of Podcast Ads before, so thanks for the tip
