Marketing club? Who wants to join?

Hey guys,

I’m a developer I love building things, but I build things and after I build them I get so demoralised when I have to go do the marketing and sales bits, so I was thinking why don’t we form a community around this where founders can get paired with marketers and sales people and they both get a piece of the pie.

Would marketers and developers be interested in something like this?

    @arg83191, @odysseus, @laurenproctor, @meesterfox, @latobatele, @Juliya790, @mnmlst, @goforstroll, @rosiesherry

So I put together a spread sheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1mhQqZtP7zeRMtxvYVYqCsdAmZ7IX6jJG7H3XNawboms/edit#gid=91378833

You guys should add your projects also marketers should add their details :) hopefully we can make some connections there!

    Hey Andrei,

My buddy and I were excites about the same concept and created githustle.com. Lots of learnings that I'd be happy to share!

Tldr; it's a great idea, but difficult to align incentives (including yours as the platform creator). Let me know if you ever want to chat.

    Cheers,

I like your idea too, I added my project to see if it goes anywhere. One quick comment though, when I tried to send feedback after creating my project, the link was broken.

      Hey Alex,
Great idea. The "get in touch" process is by e-mailing julian@githustle?

    3. 1

Nice! Just posted my project, thanks!

      Hey,

Interesting I’ll send you an email would love to talk more.

It’s sorta interesting, has it worked well for you guys ?

      Regards
      Andrei

As a marketer, I might be interested.

I'm fortunate enough to have a choice about the clients I take on and/or what I choose to market. As a result, I would probably be picky about the partners I take on. In a platform like this I would like to know:

    • Product
    • Team and how they like to work (even if it's just the developer)
    • Ability to work with the dev to modify the site (so I can create and optimize marketing funnels)
    • Profit sharing structure

As a marketer, I would, of course, also love the ability to request that devs build things. This could include entire products (aka startup ideas) and/or marketing-based tools that generate leads, such as http://howmuchtomakeanapp.com/.

    1. 1

      Hey @laurenproctor,

Yeah pretty much what I was thinking in terms of how do you attract a marketing person to your product!

It’s important to match people that want to work with you and build a relationship based on that.

I think the MarketingClub would also be subscription base and we’d need a verification process for members (developers, and marketers).

Still working out a lot of the things on how it would work! Would love to pick your brain about some of the experiences you’ve had and what you would like to see from a product like this!

      Andrei

Absolutely. Happy to connect and hear more about what you are building. Feel free to send me an email and we can set up a time to talk.

Yeah, I kinda think a managed community is a lot more powerful, look at indiehackers, if this was just a mailing list it would be a lot less successful.

Having a platform has its benefits, I’m not necessarily thinking of building it myself, it’s something that I’d love for all the things I’m building! There seems to be something along the lines out there like githustle.com which I need to check out :). But I do believe there would be value added to the maker and marketers community by a platform like this

    It's important to think about:

    • what's in it for the developers? (kinda obvious - they get marketing help)
    • what's in it for the marketers? (less obvious)

I think there is potential for something like this. Like - what if you hired a part time marketeer to support 'x' amount of indie developers, share the costs, so to speak.

    1. 1

what if you hired a part time marketeer to support 'x' amount of indie developers, share the costs
This is an interesting option, instead of profit sharing.

    2. 1

I have seen non-tech people say that "its so good to be a developer, you can just see your product coming to life" . What if marketing/sales people can pair up with developers who are building something they are interested in it. Profit sharing , stakes, pay , etc can be figured out once the product has a complete team.

    3. 1

Well I was thinking yeah the marketing person would actually get paid, and get some sort of profit share, I reckon it would be sorta interesting to see if there would be any interest from marketing people in this model

  5. 1

Very interested. I'm developer with a product ready to sell in UK and I have no idea how to start.

    Call me in!

    1. 1

Put your product on the spreadsheet for now and maybe contact some marketers on there :D

  6. 1

    I have the same problem.

But I always always heard that a company is amazing selling their self but not selling your product.

    1. 1

Interesting analogy :), they are marketing experts aren't they :)

  7. 1

Thinking about this for quite some time.

Have been needing a devoted marketer for quite a while, both to grow an existing product, and to learn from.

I'm in, where do I sign up?

  8. 1

How do i join this . I build and create so many things that i have no idea on how to market them

    1. 1

      Hey,

Thanks for the interest, I kinda put it as a proposal at this stage, would love to gather suggestions and get something going, I think with the right execution there could be something very valuable for makers, marketers and possibly influencers.

  9. 1

I am a Marketer too and I think your idea is great! I always support any kind of cooperation where both sides can extract something valuable for themselves.

    1. 1

If you are from UK maybe we should talk ! I'm looking for somebody with that role.

    2. 1

      Hey @Juliya790,

Great! Would love to speak to you as well! If you have a few minutes to have a chat sometime this week or next week! I’d love to hear your thoughts on the concept so far!

      Thanks

I’ve been thinking of profit sharing with a marketer but not sure if anyone wants to take on the financial cost.

    1. 1

Well I’m sorta thinking that the marketing person would lose all interest if they had to take on the financial cost of your marketing campaigns. Maybe they just bring the expertise, one more addition to this club would be influencers where profit sharing would work best, so we have makers, marketers and influencers collaborating and trying to grow this product and they all have to benefit somehow ...

      1. 1

True. I don't want the marketer to fail either. But the thing is, a marketer can dump thousands on pay-per-click advertising, and yield a negative return on ad spend - losing lots of money for me, all the while collecting a service fee.

It seems I am paying for someone to 'try', learn, and earn. If someone was confident they could make me money, they would accept profit sharing and putting up the variable marketing expenses. Fixed expenses like copy and landing page design I would be more willing pay for.

        1. 1

Hmm it’s sorta a dilemma, last place I worked at they fired their marketing person for this sorta reason, couldn’t really justify the spend.

But so far for me things haven’t really worked well when ever I used paid advertising, it’s kinda annoying.

But yeah sorta open to suggestions on this, I guess no marketer will give any guarantees nor they can it’s a very volatile world out there and you may not understand your customers yet

  11. 1

I have about equal experience in both, so I'm not sure how I'd fit into a club that's focused on pairing people like this.

    1. 1

I guess you could play to both teams depending on the circumstances, the way i envision this it’s like a series of pitches maybe developers trying to attract marketers to their product, also a market place for marketers where they can sell their expertise ... what do you think?

      1. 1

I'm really interested in learning opportunities. That would be the main draw for me.

  12. 1

I am a developer and would be super interested in this. I get the same problem of feeling lost once the product is developed.

    1. 1

Yeah that’s how I feel, we just need to hear something from some marketing people, seems like developers would be interested, but what are you willing to give to the marketing people @goforstroll ? I’m just trying to get an idea

      1. 1

I could work out a POC for idea validation. If that works, and both are interested we could even take that to MVP and further.

        1. 1

@goforstroll contact me on [email protected] let’s discuss this further
