Maybe A Fun Idea

As I have started working on a startup and explored all the possibilities of marketing (especially online) I have realized how incredibly valuable and vast the digital marketing industry is and how much money is poured into this sector. (Estimated value of around $40 billion! - https://www.grandviewresearch.com/industry-analysis/digital-marketing-software-dms-market) It definitely does make a lot of sense as to why this industry has become so valuable - more people are striving to be independent and start an online business or side hustle. Unless you hit the jackpot, gaining any traction online with your business requires (in many cases) a combination of nifty marketing strategies and paid acquisition channels.

Many people and businesses have taken advantage of this trend - a trend where almost anyone is willing to pay to get their landing page recognized - and have made money doing so. Some have been incredibly creative in their approach of making money through advertising. In 2005 an English student created a home page on which he sold each single pixel for one dollar. All the pixels on his website sold out - take a look at the full story here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Million_Dollar_Homepage.

This story got me thinking - there must be equally "banal" methods of selling advertising space in a fun and simple way which attracts users in large numbers and allows for incredibly cheap and also permanent advertising.

What do you guys think? Is such an idea a "one-hit wonder" or have other such ideas that you know of been successful?

I Wear Your Shirt was another interesting idea.

Jason from I Wear Your Shirt legally changed his name to Jason SurfApp for a year for $50k. That got a little press as well.

WestJet Proposals could be considered a form of advertising.

I think the difficulty is that it has to be super unique to generate publicity and so many of these things have been done.

That doesn't mean it can't be done again, though. It's just that there might be easier and more sustainable ways to make money.

Some other unique ideas that are not advertising related are.

    One Red Paperclip

    Flash Mobs

Harry Dry's Kanye Dating site may also qualify.

Thank you for the feedback! All look like incredibly creative but unfortunately not reproducible ideas.
