Medium is Sad. It only Gives You 8 Views/Awareness.
First of all, I started off this week by publishing Medium article “2020 New Year Resolution Advice from 8 Writers”. It had 2 purposes. One is to start creating branding and increase awareness. The second is to have a firsthand experience in curating and making a commentary.
It took about 1 whole day to summarize 8 articles. This generated sad 8 views on Medium natively. Medium itself is not a good platform as a distribution channel. I’m in the process of writing another piece from Carlos Ghosn now. But the better approach would be to write a blog post and break down the contents to contribute to the forum like Reddit where users are much more active.
Medium now only gives you internal promotion if you opt-in to their monetization program. It's literally zero recommendations now to other users if you aren't paywalled (and it may take a few weeks to get picked up by the algorithms even if you are paywalling your content for the Medium exposure).
This changed about 12-18 months ago when they ran out of cash and trimmed their staff. It used to be amazing before that.
Medium.com still has a ton of domain authority from Google, though. You can still use it to rank an article for specific keywords people are searching for (if they're not super competitive), and start to get a nice flow of traffic after a month or so.

And I wonder if publishing on paywall would make sense. I wanted to communicate with broader audience as Medium article as a starting point (if that makes sense). Maybe I should set up a company blog as primary, and repost there for the domain authority.

In essence, yes. Most publications are actively seeking guest writers and will have instructions on their "/about" page, or even have a dedicated "write for us" or "submit article" page.
Usually, your first exchange will happen via email, and then the publication editor is going to add you as a publication’s writer. From then on, you can submit articles right from the medium’s UI.
Oh nice. Thanks for the detail. It's nice to know there is an easy UI already in place. I think there was a publication "Startup". That seems like a good place to start!

For me as a consumer Medium is rubbish; most articles are a few lines, a few dozen words at most, only stating the obvious, and there is better quality and depth elsewhere. You get to read five bits of this junk a month then they expect you to pay? No way, and in fact I've added Medium to my uBlock Origin as a site-wide blacklist just to remind me it's a complete waste of space.
Wow, that's quite a statement! They are definitely pushing for paywall contents. Do you subscribe to (pay) other publishers like New York Times?

I learned that concept from Gary Vee. Based on the content I make in Medium (or anywhere), I can use chunk by chunk to Twitter, Facebook Page, LinkedIn, and answer related topics on Reddit.
