Meet Jeanette: an AI assistant that builds and improves her own skills 🛠️

Hey IH! I’ve been working on an AI assistant for a few months now and wanted to share the initial version here to get some feedback.

The backstory: like many of us I was inspired by OpenClaw and the idea of an agent that can do pretty much anything via a single touchpoint (Telegram). But when I set it up, I realized it was pretty involved - API keys, CLI tools, local setup, etc. Great for devs like me, but most people I know would struggle!

So I built Jeanette - a personal AI assistant that lives in WhatsApp and Telegram. No setup, no CLI tools, no installs. You just text it, and it actually does stuff for you. Under the hood it routes between frontier models (Claude, Gemini, GPT, Grok) with fallback and load balancing, but the user never has to think about any of that.

She doesn't need skills

Most assistants/agents need pre-built integrations/MCPs, or skill files to connect to external services. I started down that path too - then realised: why am I writing these? The AI can read API docs. So I stopped. Now when you say “connect to my Stripe account”, Jeanette doesn’t rely on a pre-built integration. She:

  1. Searches for the API documentation
  2. Reads it
  3. Builds the connector herself - endpoints, auth, schemas, everything
  4. Saves it and makes it available to all users

So instead of me having to pre-build integrations for every service, the AI figures it out from the docs. Users have connected Stripe, Notion, Contentful, Shopify, and a bunch of niche APIs I’d honestly never have built integrations for.

The other cool part: when Jeanette hits an API error while using a connector, she interprets the error and fixes the connector on the fly - which fixes it for everyone. And after every conversation where a connector is used, separate AI processes analyze the interactions and improve the endpoint specifications automatically. So connectors get better over time with usage, without me touching anything.

Some other things it does:

  • Scheduled tasks - “Send me a revenue summary every Monday” or “Check this Instagram account every 3 days and let me know if they post anything new”
  • Email & calendar - connects to Gmail and Google Calendar. “Check my emails - anything I need to deal with?” and it triages your inbox
  • Sub-agents - you can create dedicated AI agents for specific jobs and connect them to multiple channels. For example, a support agent that talks to customers on Intercom and your team on Slack. Because the agent is context-aware across both channels, your team can jump into the Slack thread and say "tell the customer X" or "remember this answer for anyone who asks the same thing" - and it does
  • Deep research - for bigger questions, it does multi-step web research and delivers a PDF report
  • Image generation/editing - powered by Google's latest Nano Banana models. Send it a photo and ask for edits, or describe what you want
  • Voice notes - send a voice note on WhatsApp or Telegram and Jeanette transcribes it using OpenAI Whisper, then responds as normal

Individually, these capabilities might not seem that impressive - most AI tools can do some version of each. But combined, they're worth more than the sum of their parts. For example, you can say: "Every other morning, draft me a new blog post about a relevant topic that doesn't conflict with my last three posts. Save it as a draft in Contentful with a featured image. Then message me a preview link so I can approve or reject it." That single instruction uses scheduled tasks, web browsing, self-written connectors (Contentful), image generation (Nano Banana), and messaging - all working together autonomously.

I'm not condoning publishing AI slop, by the way!

The stack (for the nerds)

  • TypeScript monorepo (pnpm workspaces)
  • Express API + BullMQ workers
  • PostgreSQL + Redis
  • Multi-model AI (Claude, Gemini, GPT, Grok) with automatic routing and fallback
  • Twilio for WhatsApp, Telegram Bot API
  • React Router v7 SSR for the dashboard and marketing site

Where I’m at

This is very much a soft launch - the product works, but it’s still in a testing phase and you will probably run into rough edges. I’m actively monitoring server logs and LLM traces via Langfuse, and I jump in to fix issues as they come up (usually within hours). It’s the kind of project where real usage teaches me way more than any amount of planning.

One note: please don’t share sensitive data (passwords, API keys, etc.) directly in the chat. Jeanette knows not to ask for that - if she needs credentials, she’ll send you a secure intake form behind a short link, and anything you submit through that is encrypted at rest using AES-256.

The main thing I’m trying to figure out: what’s the best channel for acquiring users for something like this? It’s a weird product to market because it doesn’t have a traditional UI - the whole experience is in a chat thread. Happy to hear any thoughts on positioning, pricing, or features.

Would love for you to try it and tell me what breaks - that’s genuinely the most helpful thing right now. The fastest way is to message the WhatsApp bot or Telegram bot.

    The self-healing connector concept is the real differentiator here. Every other AI assistant requires pre-built integrations. An assistant that reads docs and builds its own, then improves with usage, is a fundamentally different architecture. For marketing a no-UI product, short video demos showing real WhatsApp conversations would be your strongest asset. Show the “one instruction, five capabilities” example you described. That sells itself.

    ‘builds her own skills’ is the part I’d want to see more on. from running agents daily, that claim usually means memory + tool fetching. what’s actually changing?

      @ItsKondrat Fair call - that pattern match is right most of the time. "Builds its own skills" usually just means RAG over tool descriptions.

      In this case what changes is persistent, not contextual. Each service/skill has a spec in the DB (endpoint paths, JSON schemas, auth config, headers, etc.). When calls fail, the AI updates the spec - not the context. And after each conversation, a separate pass reviews the entire call log (including any api errors, retries, etc) and refines those specs further. Those changes are then shared across all users, so User A's first call teaches the system that a particular API needs Authorization: Bearer ..., and User B's first call just works.

      So it's schema-level evolution, not memory + retrieval. You could wipe everything in context and the improvements stick. Not claiming it always works - some APIs stay broken until I step in - but there's real state change happening.

        ok that’s actually a meaningful distinction - persistent spec updates on failure vs just stuffing context. that title fires the skeptic reflex automatically but this makes more sense now

    This is really interesting. The idea of an assistant that can dynamically build and improve its own integrations is powerful, especially for long-tail APIs. The chat-first interface also makes it feel very accessible compared to traditional agent setups

      Thanks! Long-tail APIs were actually the main thing that pushed me down this path - there was no way I was ever going to hand-build integrations for the stuff users actually want to connect to. Letting the AI handle it scales way better than my patience does 🤣

      Also, this now enables the user to connect to all kinds of obscure and - in many cases - badly documented APIs! The agentic loops will just figure it out... And if some provider decides to introduce breaking changes, it'll figure that out too!

    Hey Richard, this is a killer concept. The self-healing connector logic is a massive win. Solving that integration bottleneck is a total game-changer for staying in the flow. I haven't had a chance to dive in yet, but the "no-setup" WhatsApp approach looks incredibly slick. Great work!

    The self-building connector approach is genuinely interesting - it's basically treating API documentation as a runtime input rather than a build-time dependency. That's a meaningful architectural difference from most AI assistant platforms.

    The self-healing part is what makes it viable though. The initial connector generation is the easy part - any LLM can read docs and produce an API client. The hard part is handling all the edge cases: pagination, rate limits, auth token refresh, API versioning, undocumented behavior. How does the self-repair work in practice? Does it retry with different parameters, or does it actually modify the connector code?

    On the user acquisition question - for a chat-only product, I think the biggest challenge is discoverability. People don't search for "WhatsApp AI assistant" the way they search for a SaaS tool. The sub-agents feature is actually your most marketable angle for businesses, but it's buried at the bottom of your post. A small business owner who hears "AI support agent that works across Intercom and Slack with no setup" would pay for that immediately.

    Have you considered positioning the sub-agents as the primary product for B2B, while keeping the personal assistant as the consumer entry point? Two audiences, one platform, different messaging.

      Thanks @Sim_in_Silico! "Runtime input vs build-time dependency" is a great way to put it 👍

      On the self-repair: the trick is that connectors aren't code, they're just specs in the DB. Each endpoint is a record with an input schema, path template, headers, auth config, etc. So when something breaks, the AI isn't rewriting code - it's just updating the spec.

      In practice, when a call fails, the error + the original input get fed back to the AI alongside the current spec, and it figures out what to fix:

      • 400/422 with a field message → updates the input schema (field was required, enum had a typo, that kind of thing)
      • 401/403 → usually the auth config is wrong (needs Bearer prefix, or the API key goes in header not query)
      • 404 → path template issue, or it was using a v1 route when v2 is live
      • Pagination / rate limits → a separate introspection pass catches these across multiple calls and adds notes to the spec so future calls handle them

      The fix gets saved, so the next person calling that endpoint gets the improved version. Not bulletproof - genuinely undocumented behavior still bites me - but it handles most of the real stuff.

      On positioning - honestly yeah, you're probably right. I've been leading with the personal assistant because that's the faster "oh shit" moment (text it, it does something real, you're hooked - hopefully!). Sub-agents need a bit more setup to get to the magic. But a small biz owner searching "Intercom AI bot" is a way shorter path than me trying to explain why they need a chat assistant.

      Might split the entry points - jeanette.ai/for-business leading with sub-agents, jeanette.ai for the personal pitch. Same product, different front door. Then I could perhaps run an outreach campaign to SMEs.

    The “AI builds its own integrations” idea is a big shift.
    You’re basically turning APIs into runtime-discoverable infrastructure instead of something pre-wired.
    Curious how often the generated connectors actually fail in edge cases?

      Thanks! NGL - they do fail more that I'd like them to right now.

      Just a case of continuing to fix & iterate though (that's if the AI doesn't fix the issues itself before I get to it). I have set up decent error reporting so I do get notified every time something fails.

    This is impressive, but I wonder if the flexibility could become a downside. If it can do everything, it might be harder for users to understand what to use it for first.

      Totally valid point. I guess that's where my confusion around how to market this stems. Although as mentioned in my reply just now to @Sim_in_Silico I'm edging toward setting up a "business" entry point at jeanette.ai/for-business

    This is actually pretty interesting — especially the self-building connector part, that’s a strong direction.

    One thing that stood out though — the product feels much bigger than a “personal assistant” layer, but the name “Jeanette” makes it come across more like a single-user chatbot.

    When something starts handling integrations, workflows, and multi-step tasks, perception shifts more toward infrastructure/platform than assistant.

    Curious if you’ve thought about how the name might affect how seriously people evaluate it — especially beyond early users?

      Thanks so much for the feedback. To be completely honest, one of the main reasons I went with Jeanette is because the .ai domain was available 😂

      Initially, it was indeed aimed to be more of a single-user or single-conversation chatbot, but then inevitably the scope started to grow. At this point, I'm interested to see how far users dive into the product. If it turns out to be the case that they're not using the "deeper" features, then maybe you're right and I should think about repositioning the branding somehow.

      I guess the tricky part here is catering for both audiences:

      1. Less tech-savvy people who simply want a personal assistant to manage emails, their schedule, etc.
      2. SMEs with teams who would like to set up sub-agents and use it in a professional context

        That makes a lot of sense — this is exactly where most products hit that identity shift.

        The tricky part isn’t just choosing between audiences, it’s what signal the name sends before someone even tries it.

        “Jeanette” works well if the entry point is personal/assistant-first.

        But as soon as people hear about connectors, sub-agents, workflows — they start evaluating it more like a system than a persona.

        Sometimes the solution isn’t choosing one audience, but separating:
        – a friendly entry layer (assistant feel)
        – and a more “serious” underlying system identity

        Curious to see how your usage patterns evolve — that’ll probably make the decision obvious.

    The multi-model routing setup is definitely a smart approach for an autonomous system, especially having it fallback smoothly. I've found that reliability is the biggest hurdle when trying to orchestrate these kinds of multi-step workflows.

    As for acquisition channels, since it's entirely chat-based, reaching out in places where users are already trying to solve complex scheduling or API problems could be strong. Maybe targeting specific developer or operations communities where context-switching is a known pain point?
