Memory consumption, dataset size, and performance: how does it all relate?

Thanks, Ryan, super helpful. I've felt frustrated about speed issues many times. Does anyone have any other techniques they use besides the ones mentioned here? I'd be keen to know what the most efficient way to decrease dataset size is.
