Mention[doot]com-like app
Hello hackers!
Did you know about mention[doot]com? Basically you set a keyword, like your brand name, and you get notified when someone on the internet "mentions" that word.
I'd like to build a similar service, but less expensive and having features that you would find useful.
Two questions:
- Would you use it?
- If yes, what features would you want to see?
PS: I'm trying to evade Mention's crawlers with [doot] xD

Brand monitoring is definitely an interesting idea. It would be great if it can be focused on niche communities, for example, montior comments on IndieHackers or specific topics on ProductHunt.

Thanks for your feedback. You have an interesting point. I could determine the context of the keyword(is it inside a comment or an article?) and its source(website or author metadata).

Brand24, Brandmentions, Mention... I am sure there is more... all have been out of my budget. I am about to look into using https://notify.ly/ seems like they are more startup friendly and have a great roadmap ahead
Thanks Logan! "startup friendly" is the magic keyword, that's how I aim. Notify.ly is cool, but it "spills" all the events on Slack. I'd want to derive intelligence from my events through metadata and aggregation. This requires a dashboard.
I'd use it and would prefer cost to be ramped via # of mentions. I.e. if I'm a startup it should be free, until I hit x mentions. Tier the prices so they're very affordable. Gamify it.
Most probably I'd go your way - a freemium model until you hit X mentions. Where X doesn't matter if you're a startup.
You spark interesting ideas of how I could gamify it. For example, if my crawler detects your keyword and my MVP's name in the same context, I'd think you are crediting my service, so I'd give you more free mentions. Thanks!

You are correct, but Google Alerts just gives you the source. You have to ask yourself:
Oh i see what you mean. Full service monitoring. Sounds cool.
