Messaging in a web app - What service do you use?

Hey IH Fam,

I am working on a web app and I want to add functionality for internal messaging (within the team) as well as external SMS. I am looking at Twilio for this, but was curious to see what's out there.

What services/tools are you using to make this happen? Do you use a tool, or custom code? Both?
