🔮 Predictions

☁️ Opportunities

🏔️ Risks

  • Scalability - Micro-consulting is hard to scale. Your time is limited.
  • Reputation Risk - A lack of knowledge will lead to loss of trust and clients.
  • Platform Risk - You're subject to platforms' roadmaps, outages and fees. Prefershut down after many failed pivots. Set up multiple profiles to mitigate platform risk. Davide Pollicino has profiles on CodementorMentor Cruise and Clarity.

🔑 Key Lessons

🔥 Hot Takes

  • In spite of shorter sessions, some clients will expect you to deliver the same value as traditional consultants.
  • Micro-consulting sessions don't have to be cheap. Meredith Marder offers her Better Exit Strategy session for $10,000.
  • Speaking at events, conferences and workshops is micro-consulting. These are non-recurring, one-off engagements.

😠 Haters

"How can you solve my problem in 1 hour?"
Micro-consulting has its limits. One hour may not be enough to solve a complex problem. But an experienced micro-consultant can find the root cause and suggest a valid solution.

*"People can **abuse *free advice."
Pro-bono consulting is a choice. Decide how much you can give away for free. Limit the number of free sessions where necessary.

"Micro-consulting has scalability problems."
This is true. We shared examples of more scalable products. Productized services, courses and SaaS are great for helping lots of people at once.

"I can turn my knowledge into scalable products right away. Why bother with micro-consulting?"
Talking to clients helps you find and validate valuable problems. Which you can solve at scale.

    Micro-consulting feels underrated.

Do you think the $10k/session pricing works better when the consultant is known
vs when they’re still building credibility?

  2. 3

This was such good information. Im a brand consultant And have recently been thinking how could I do my job at a quicker rate…or describe it. And I know some people use “intensive” but that doesn’t communicate well in the consumer’s mind. So, food for thought!

Hi Charnell, feel free to check out https://geeksandexperts.com if that is something that interests you to start off with more warm-up or initial sessions rather than an intensive deep dive.

    Hey
I'd like to do micro consulting in the future but have no idea where to start 😅

I have already built trust with my 12k subscribers on thisweekinreact.com, a newsletter for React software developer professionals.
How easy it is to sell consulting when you already have such an asset?

Thanks, now I know how to call what I do ! #SparringPartner

Please don't confuse consultants with freelancers.

    These are TOTALLY different roles.

Moreover, most of the people mentioned in the post don't call consultants even themselves.

And no, because you read this bs, don't call yourself a consultant.
