Midjourney shuts down free trials after influx of users and massive fake images

In the last few weeks, we have seen a lot of AI-generated images about famous people that went viral. Now, Midjourney killed the free trial indefinitely due to a wave of fake users.

How is AI affecting the way we create and consume media?

Stable diffusion is free. You can install on your local machine. Tons of models availables

Yeah. May take a bit more technical knowledge than Midjourney but the open-source models are a great alternative (and you don't run the risk of anyone shutting you down)

That is crazy! I feel like it didn't take long for the pushback to begin. The open letter, fake accounts, and fraudulent stuff can only go on for so long.

The same thing happened with Crypto before it became extremely regulated.

Crypto hasn't been regulated and scams are still ongoing. Regarding Crypto, you can only regulate the brokerages which have not been done globally yet, still the majority of the bad actors do not operate on centralized exchanges, they cash out there.

Most fraudulent activity occurs on the blockchain, either by hacking poorly coded smart-contracts or using phishing attacks to steal seed phrases and access private wallets. I believe 2022 was the biggest year for these kind of thefts totaling in the billions.

... aren't "fake images" the entire business Midjourney is in?

Yup. But not meant to make internet users get confused about famous people or historical events. You'll get my point if you read the article
