Milestone unlocked, my boring and simple meta directory of job boards JobBoardSearch π passed $50k π΅ in revenue π₯³
It made $4,887 π΅ alone in November!
I still can't believe it, 92% up in revenue and 140% up in traffic compared to the previous year
I know for some it's pocket money but it's very cheap to run.
I didn't have the intention to monetize when I started it
but after 2 months online Pieter Levels (Founder of RemoteOK) sent me a DM saying "Start charging" for job boards to get listed, so I did π
built it using HTML, CSS, vanilla JavaScript (some jQuery), and PHP
put it online after 5 hours of work because I learnt that StackOverflow Jobs shut down and people were asking for alternatives
nothing was planned, it all happened by chance.
How does it make money?
Sponsored job boards
Listing upgrades
Ad slots
CPC
At the beginning of November added "Link building as a service" at $199 and it made $2,985 so here is another income stream.

Some folks I got inspired and why:
- Pieter Levels: learned to be pragmatic, to ship fast and improve later, building in public is win-win, not be afraid of failing.
His book "MAKE: learn to build profitable startups" is a must read
But most important: ship more

- Phil McParlane: is the founder of a successful job board "4 day week", has grown his job seekers newsletter to 400k, and knows how to sell ad slots
If you run a job board from him you will learn how to monetize
He knows SEO for job boards, he always shares great tips like

- Marc Kohlbrugge: is the reason I started to be active on Twitter
He is the founder of WIP .co, the reason for my boost in productivity and accountability

- Arvid Kahl learned that costs 0 to be kind, encourage others, and that building in public is a win-win.
Learned about audiences from his book "The Embedded Entrepreneur"

- Daniel Vassallo: inspired me due to his portfolio of small bets strategy (Now I have 5 income streams).
To treat projects like cattle, not pets.
When inspiration strikes work with high intensity otherwise take it easy.
He runs SmallBets: try making $1000 with a small project first

- Pat Walls how to grow newsletters tips, SEO, and how to be consistent, success doesn't happen overnight
His biz Starter Story is an amazing place to get ideas and get inspired from 1000s of real successful founders (instead of snake oil sellers)
A few days ago I was amazed to figure out that JobBoardSearch's story was published starterstory.com/jobboardsearch-breakdown
His own story is so inspiring

- Marc Louvion means "resilience"
His creativity and skills for distribution are second to non
Before his massive success, he failed a lot and got depressed but he knew the only way was to keep trying
Super grateful to all who inspired me to achieve the $50K milestone and contributed by purchasing
And to everyone that keep mentioning JobBoardSearch π
I never paid for any mentions or ads, but there are accounts with over 500K followers doing it.
It's super hard but not impossible, you need to keep trying, consistency is the key here
to learn *your way" to overcome bad days and low self confidence
honestly, when I reached $49K I had deep feelings of "What if I never reach $50K and all job boards cancel"
it turns out November was one of the best months ever!
DO IT AND DON'T QUIT TOO SOON πͺπ»
I'm enjoying so much running this tiny startup and am happy to help job board owners to grow their traffic and make money.
